CIEE Security Alert - Santiago, Chile (Update)
Santiago and Valparaíso, among other cities, closed their fourth consecutive day of protests on Monday, 21 October, with fresh clashes between security forces and demonstrators as its curfew was extended through Tuesday.
Protests are occurring in various areas in downtown Santiago today, however there have been only small areas of violence at the time of this writing and some public transportation is now available. Some stores are now beginning to reopen as well. Yet, the environment does remain tense in Santiago, and other cities in Chile, and the possibility of clashes between protesters and security forces does remain likely. Chilean authorities confirmed that there will be a curfew in place for Santiago today, from 2000hrs to 0500hrs. CIEE Santiago students gathered at a homestay this morning for a discussion with CIEE staff about the unrest. Students shared concerns, their parent's concerns, and were able to freely express their feelings about the tense situation as well as have their questions related to safety and academics answered directly by CIEE staff.
All CIEE Santiago participants are confirmed to be safe. Local staff are in constant contact with our participants and their host families, are available 24/7 to respond to student emergencies, and are providing daily guidance on safety measures to be followed along with information on classes.
These protests have begun to have an impact on students’ academic program, with classes at our host institutions and at our CIEE Center being cancelled on Monday, October 21, and today, October 22. To ensure students in CIEE-delivered classes stay on-track with assignments, CIEE faculty will work on-line with their students, until in-person classes resume.
Santiago staff are also in communication with our host institutions: Universidad de Chile; University Diego Portales; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, to determine class cancellation dates and student options for completing assignments despite the closures. CIEE will notify home school advisors and emergency contacts should the situation continue, and course cancellation become a persistent occurrence.
CIEE will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety. CIEE has reminded all participants to stay in contact with their families. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-40-STUDY.
