CIEE Security Alert - Chile (Update)

Fri, 10/25/2019

Chile’s two-week state of emergency remains in place and curfews currently vary by city, as protests continue to occur in various locations throughout the country, including Santiago and Valparaiso. All CIEE Participants throughout Chile have been confirmed safe, and local CIEE staff remain in regular contact with our participants and their host families, and are available 24/7 to respond to student emergencies. No host families have reported any issues with securing food or water at this time.

In Santiago, truck and taxi drivers blocked major highways in protest of the cost of road tolls today, 25 October. Vehicular traffic was slowed significantly this morning. Further rallies are expected in the Plaza Italia area in the capital and in other major urban centers on Friday afternoon.  A city-wide curfew remains in effect, time to be determined.

We will know as of Sunday, October 27, if our host institutions, Universidad de Chile, University Diego Portales, and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, plan to resume classes on Monday.  Students will be notified by local CIEE staff when these decisions have been made.  Academic-related updates will be relayed to sending schools, parents, and guardians early next week.

In Valparaiso, the National Congress was evacuated this afternoon, 25 October, due to violent clashes between protestors and security forces at the National Congress building. Gatherings were also reported on Avenue d’Espagna and Plaza Sucre in Valparaiso on Friday. Public transportation remained available and store fronts, except may supermarkets, were largely open throughout the morning hours before the protest actions took place.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) has closed their campus next week, October 28-November 1, largely due to proximity to protest actions. Universidad Adolfo Ibañez (UAI), located in Viña del Mar, plans to resume classes as of Monday, October 28.  Academic-related updates will be relayed to sending schools, parents, and guardians early next week. A city-wide curfew remains in effect, from 2000hrs to 0500hrs.

CIEE will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety.  CIEE has reminded all participants to stay in contact with their families.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-40-STUDY.
