CIEE Security Alert – Hong Kong
On Monday, 12 August, flights out of Hong Kong international Airport have been cancelled due to the ongoing protests. According to local media sources, airport officials ordered the cancellation of all flights out of Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) for the rest of the day on Monday afternoon, 12 August. The cancellations come after thousands of anti-government protesters gathered at the airport for a fourth straight day. The airport’s website shows all departures from around 1830hrs (0630 EST, 1030 UTC) onwards as being cancelled. Inbound flights already in the air will reportedly be allowed to land, but any which had not departed will be delayed.
CIEE Participants have continued to be reminded by CIEE Hong Kong staff, via our emergency alert system, to avoid the vicinity of any protests to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and police operations.
We have no reports of any CIEE participants being directly impacted by the airport closure or any of the protests in Hong Kong at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, provide updated information to participants as warranted, and assist participants who may soon be traveling via HKG.
