CIEE Security Alert – France and Belgium

Sun, 12/02/2018

CIEE continues to monitor the “Yellow Jacket” Protests throughout France and Belgium, some of which have turned violent over the weekend.  The protests are related to discontent from rising fuel prices and taxes. CIEE Participants in France and Belgium have been advised to avoid the vicinity of any political gatherings and protests in order to mitigate against unruly crowd behavior and police crowd control measures.  We have no reports of our participants being directly impacted at this time.

The safety and security of our participants, faculty, and staff is our first priority. CIEE Participants have emergency contact information for CIEE staff members, who are available at all times. We have also advised participants to enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), to ensure they receive the latest information about security issues from the U.S. Embassy.

CIEE staff is in regular contact with the U.S. Department of State, and we have reviewed emergency plans and tested protocols to ensure the utmost responsiveness in the event that emergency action is needed. CIEE is part of the Overseas Security Advisory Council, a division of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security in the U.S. Department of State, and we coordinate with a consortium of security professionals that works with more than 60 other colleges and institutions throughout the U.S.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-40-STUDY.
