CIEE Security Alert – Chile (Update)
Chile’s two-week state of emergency remains in place and curfews continue to be announced day-by-day as protests occur in various locations throughout the country, including Santiago and Valparaiso.
Local CIEE staff are in regular contact with our participants and their host families, are available 24/7 to respond to student emergencies, and are providing daily guidance on safety measures to be followed along with information on classes.
In Santiago, protests continued in some downtown areas. While there are isolated confrontations, especially after curfew hours, the protests are largely peaceful. Public transportation is generally operational, but some lines remain impacted. This morning, all students received their daily notifications with guidance; those with online classes received reminders of related work.
In Valparaiso, protests occurred in some downtown locations. Public transportation is generally available and most stores are open, though many supermarkets remain closed. CIEE staff conducted a group meeting with all students (either in-person or online) to discuss current events as well as academic and security topics.
CIEE will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with our participants to ensure their ongoing safety. CIEE has reminded all participants to stay in contact with their families. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-40-STUDY.
