Working in the U.S.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find a job in the U.S. from so far away?

Thousands of students are able to pre-arrange a job in the U.S. from their own country, so you should be able to as well as long as you're willing to put some time and effort into it. Once you are accepted onto the program there are many resources available to you through CIEE, including ROADSHOWS, CIEE RECRUIT, and ATLAS, a jobs hiring database. Call 1-888-COUNCIL for more information, or ask your CIEE sending agent for details.

I've contacted many employers but haven't heard back from anyone. What should I do?

Keep in mind that employers may be receiving several resumes for one position and so it may take time to review them and follow up with candidates. If you really want the job and want to be sure that the employer received your resume, it doesn't hurt to call unless there are instructions saying "no calls please."

Do I have to send a cover letter and resume?

Not necessarily. Follow all of the instructions that the employer provides. Many of the Work and Travel USA employers can be contacted by email, and it is not always necessary to provide a resume. However, you are most impressive with a detailed and specific resume that tells about your work experience and attributes!

What if I don't have any work experience?

When you are applying for a job, be sure to include information on any past work experience. It does not have to be a formal job. Babysitting, tutoring and volunteering all show the employer that you can handle responsibility.

Can I submit a resume by email?

You should be careful about submitting a resume by email. Keep in mind that many companies will not open attachments sent by names they don't recognize. Follow the instructions that the company provides about how to apply for the job. If you do send a resume by email, you should follow it up with a hard copy in the mail. Another option is to send a shorter version or summary of your resume within the text of the email, saying that you'd be happy to attach a full resume if requested.

Layoffs and Firing

You could be laid off (lose your job because business is slow) for any number of reasons, which may not reflect on your performance in that job. Layoffs are often the result of financial issues within the company. You are usually given some kind of notice before this occurs.

If you are fired, it is because the company is unhappy with you. You will rarely be fired because of lack of job skills. Most often, people are fired for being consistently uncooperative, or for disciplinary reasons. If you are doing something wrong, you will usually be told so before the situation becomes serious. Contact CIEE about problem situations.

If you are laid off or fired, you MUST contact CIEE as soon as possible at 1-888-268-6245!
