Now that you are here, make sure to take good care of yourself! Living and working in the U.S. will be an adjustment, and you need to be aware of U.S. laws and how to be safe. You will be covered by CIEE insurance while here, but make sure you understand the rules of the insurance, and prepare by researching what you need to do to if you become sick or injured. Don’t forget: CIEE is always here for you.

A little caution, common sense, and some basic street smarts will go a long way in preventing any problems. Here are some tips for staying safe:

  • You may be approached by people asking for money. You may say no—but please be polite.
  • Avoid empty streets, subway stops, and bus stops—always travel where other people are close by and make sure you know where you’re going or have directions. It is always best to not travel alone at night.
  • Walk in a confident and purposeful manner.
  • Do not expose large amounts of cash in public.
  • Keep your possessions in a firm grasp.
  • Be especially careful in railway and bus stations. These are often crowded and attract pick pockets.
  • Car thieves are common—do not leave any luggage or valuables that might be attractive to thieves in an unattended car.
  • Beware of potential scams, such as people bumping into you. This could be a way to distract you while your wallet is being stolen.
  • Finally, trust your instincts, and always remain cautious.

If you ask me if I want to go back - I'll say a big YEAH!. It was a great experience, which I owe to my agent and CIEE. Thank you, guys! You did a great job!.
