Now that you are here, make sure to take good care of yourself! Living and working in the U.S. will be an adjustment, and you need to be aware of U.S. laws and how to be safe. You will be covered by CIEE insurance while here, but make sure you understand the rules of the insurance, and prepare by researching what you need to do to if you become sick or injured. Don’t forget: CIEE is always here for you.

CIEE Insurance

Your travel insurance policy is designed to cover your medical expenses during a temporary stay in the U.S. As a general rule, your insurance will cover medical emergencies and most sicknesses, but routine examinations, vaccinations, regular dental treatment, or vision services will not be covered. As is usual with these types of limited policies, there is no coverage for pre-existing conditions. If you suffer from a chronic disease (such as asthma or diabetes), you need to ensure that your health insurance at home covers you for any costs related to these sicknesses while in the U.S.

Always carry your Insurance ID card
In the U.S., you must show proof of insurance when you need medical treatment. If you do not have proof of insurance, you may be asked to pay more than your co-pay at the time of the visit. This can be very expensive. Your insurance ID card is your proof of insurance and is located on your confirmation of insurance form.

Did you have medical attention while in the U.S.? Make sure CIEE receives the mail! If you had medical attention while on the program, it’s your responsibility to make sure that your bills are resolved.
