CIEE - New Host Companies - The Intern/Trainee Program

Program Purpose

The purpose of the J-1 Intern/Trainee program is to provide qualified young professionals and university students with a period of practical training at US companies and organizations. Unlike other work exchange programs, the J-1 Intern/Trainee program is based on a structured placement plan agreed upon by both Host Organization and participant. During the internship or training period, emphasis is on the fulfillment of concrete goals and objectives while providing the participant with insight into American business practice and culture.

Upon completion of the program, an intern or trainee should return to their home country better equipped to meet the unique challenges of their field or profession.

The J-1 Intern/Trainee program is not meant to facilitate a change in career or an extended vacation from school. All candidates and Host Organizations will be screened to ensure that the integrity of the Intern/Trainee exchange program is maintained from start to finish.

For detailed information on the scope and purpose of the J-1 Visa Exchange Program, we encourage you to read the Department of State’s Interim Final Rule.
