CIEE - New Host Organizations - Hosting an Intern/Trainee

Role of the Host Organization

To participate in the Intern/Trainee Program, your organization must be able to provide a structured, practical training experience while abiding by some key program regulations. Because the purpose of the J-1 Intern/Trainee program is to foster professional exchange, the Host Organization is expected to ensure that the DS-7002, or Training/Internship Placement Plan, is followed for the duration of the program.

You must also be able to provide the intern or trainee with the following:

  • A proper workspace and any necessary equipment related to the proposed program;
  • Ongoing professional supervision, evaluation, guidance and support throughout the program;
  • Orientation to the workplace and to the local community.

For detailed information on the scope and purpose of the J-1 Visa Exchange Program as well as the specific responsibilities of the Host Organization, we encourage you to read the Department of State’s Interim Final Rule (see Section 22 CFR, Part 62): Click here to download.
