Hospitality and Tourism Internships / Training

Given the unique nature of practical training within the fields of hospitality and tourism, the Department of State has included specific requirements for internships/training in these fields in the new regulations.

Specific Program Requirements

Program Duration:  In nearly all cases, participation in these fields will be limited to a maximum of 12 months. The only exception will be for those programs that focus strictly on management skills and could therefore be classified as a Business or Management, rather than as Hospitality or Tourism.

Rotations/Phases:  To highlight the varied skill sets and functional areas to which an Intern/Trainee will be exposed, all hospitality and tourism programs of more than six months in duration need to include at least three different phases.

Completing Form DS-7002

When completing this document, we ask you to bear in mind that it will not only serve as a guide for you and the Intern/Trainee throughout the program, but that it will also be reviewed for program compliance by CIEE as well as by a US Consular Officer during the mandatory visa interview of the applicant. Therefore, please take the time to carefully consider the program of training you intend to provide, and the various components, activities and objectives that make it up.

Page 1:  This page includes general program information related to the applicant and to the Host Organization, or Site of Activity. If you are not aware of the applicant-specific details, please make sure that s/he completes this section before you sign and date it.

Pages 2-6:  These pages serve to outline the overall course and content of the proposed Internship/Training plan. Again, the number of phases you should include depends on the proposed length of training; as a basic guideline, programs of more than six months in length are required to have a minimum of three phases.

Additional Host Organization Information:  Since Form DS-7002 does not include fields for all data pieces that CIEE as program sponsor is required to document, there is one final page that you will need to complete; however, please note that this is a one-time requirement and that you will not be required to submit this form again if you host another Intern/Trainee through CIEE in the future unless the information has changed.

Submitting Form DS-7002

If you have already located a potential Intern/Trainee, the completed (and signed) form should be sent directly to the applicant for submission with his/her portion of the application to the CIEE Representative in his or her home country; if CIEE is assisting you with recruitment, the completed form should be submitted to your CIEE contact person.
