Managing your Money

As a component of your Trainee Program application you were asked to provide evidence that you will have at least $750 dollars available per month of your training program. Whether you will be compensated at least $750 per month by your Host Company, or have sufficient funds in savings or by other means, it is important that you manage your finances wisely. The cost of living can vary greatly from city to city in the US, and it will take some time for you to understand how much you will need each month for basic living costs, such as rent, food and transportation, and how much you will have left over for social or personal spending. Managing your funds wisely will help ensure that you have an enjoyable and stress-free stay in the US, and may also allow you to set aside some money for travel at the end of your program.

Second Job
Although you might be interested in supplementing your income while in the US, the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program does not permit participants to take a second job during their stay in the US. Doing so may result in your withdrawal from the Trainee Program.

Additionally, since applications are approved and visas issued for specific Host Companies, participants also are not allowed to accept secondary training positions at companies other than those listed on their program documents.
