Bicycle Safety

A Special Note on Bicycles
Every year, thousands of people are killed in completely avoidable bicycle-related accidents here in the US. While you are here in the US, feel free to use a bike for transportation. However, you will need to take certain precautionary steps, and learn the rules of the road before you venture out into the streets. While many states require bicyclists to wear helmets, you should consider this a personal requirement. Many Trainees come from countries with vastly different bike cultures. Bike culture here in the United States is not as friendly as you might expect, but this is still an excellent way to travel if you are properly prepared.

While there are many bike-specific paths around the US, and most certainly in every major city, you will often be forced to ride on ordinary city streets. Be aware that motorists will not be as accepting of your presence on the road as you might be used to, and you will have to take extra care when crossing busy intersections, or riding on a road with narrow shoulders. While you will always have the legal right-of-way, the motorists do not always respect this. Again, buy a helmet; it could save your life.

In addition to helmet usage, and general care taken while riding, you are also responsible for your own safety in other ways. Tie your shoelaces, and bind up baggy clothing so they do not become entangled with your bike's gears. Also, in the US, cyclists are required to ride WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. This means, as cars travel along the right side of the road, you too must travel along the right side of the road. Riding into oncoming traffic is extremely dangerous, as drivers cannot tell how fast you are moving, or if you are in control of your bike. Finally, make sure that the bike you choose to ride is in proper working order.

If you take the time to prepare for cycling here in the US, it can be a safe and enjoyable hobby and form of transportation. Please do not neglect these simple safety pointers, and risk your own life or someone else's.
