Influenza A (H1N1) Update Winter 2009-2010

CIEE understands that the H1N1 Influenza may be a cause of concern to our participants. Please be assured that we are monitoring the global situation carefully so that we can properly care for and advise our participants. Based on advice from global health organizations, we are confident that well-informed CIEE participants can enjoy a healthy, positive and fulfilling experience in the United States.

CIEE advises all participants to become familiar with the World Health Organization/Centers for Disease Control recommendations, precautions, and symptoms associated with H1N1, and to seek immediate medical attention should any flu-like symptoms develop. Of course, any decision regarding travel and one’s health should always be made in consultation with a doctor.

Precautions recommended:

Experts have advised that the H1N1 virus requires the same precautions and responses as any other flu and, for most people, should not interfere with their daily lives and plans. The World Health Organization maintains that individuals should not change, limit, nor restrict their travel plans and activities. The best prevention continues to be the practice of good hygiene.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, since this is how germs can spread.
  • For more information on precautions you can take, visit the FAQ section of the WHO website.

Symptoms:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, H1N1 symptoms are similar to the common flu, and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
