Teach in Spain, teach overseas with CIEE

teach in spain location

Andalusia is a vibrant Autonomous Region in southern Spain flanked by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, and the rest of Spain to the north. It is bursting with quaint pueblo blanco villages, traditional cities, and an unbeatable culture. Whether you prefer a merienda or late night tapas, the culinary options in Andalusia are boundless. From olives of the heartland to the fresh catch in the Mediterranean, taste buds are never ignored. The birthplace of flamenco, Picasso, and Antonio Banderas is also home to the national sport corrida de toros, a tradition enjoyed or loathed by locals and visitors alike. The countless fiestas and long siestas all contribute to the unique customs of perennially sunny Andalusia.

teaching assignments

In cooperation with the Junta de Andalucía, CIEE has developed a Language and Culture Assistant Program in public bilingual schools in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. The Teach in Spain program was initiated to make education in Spain both multilingual and multicultural, thus helping to develop cultural understanding between the citizens of Spain and the United States.

While living and working abroad, program participants have the opportunity to learn more about Spanish language and culture while providing Spanish students and teachers an opportunity to broaden and increase their knowledge of the English language and American culture through interaction with native speakers.

English language teaching assignments are in rural areas, towns, and cities in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. Program participants work in Spain under the supervision and guidance of classroom teachers and have a teaching load of 12 hours per week.

Teaching assistants placed in primary or secondary schools primarily participate in English classes but also actively help with content classes taught in English such as social studies, physical education, and music. Participants placed in official language schools work with adults learning the English language. All assistants’ roles as native speakers and experts on the U.S. stimulate the students' interests and greatly improve their oral communication abilities. Program participants may work with entire classes at a time or with small groups of students to develop speaking, listening, reading, writing skills, and cultural understanding. In many schools the teaching assistant also teaches English to members of the school staff. Assistants are never left alone with entire classes nor are they responsible for grading, discipline or supervision of students.

Assistants and the school staff may agree upon other activities and responsibilities they should be involved in, including attending faculty meetings, making presentations in classes, and participating in extra-curricular activities such as workshops, field trips, music and theater performances, sporting events, international day, English language clubs, and more.

teach abroad orientation

All Teach in Spain participants receive an in-country orientation in Seville conducted by CIEE staff and local experts. The focus is on cross-cultural understanding and practical information to help with the adaptation process. The training course provides resources needed to be an effective Language and Culture Assistant and helps develop essential skills for teaching, including the practical applications of teaching English as a Foreign Language in Spain. Housing and most meals are provided.
