CIEE is accepting Enrichment Grant proposals on a rolling basis. Enrichment Grants are meant to enrich the CIEE Teach Abroad experience for participants, and their host community. Participants may apply for enrichment grants after they have been in-country for 30 days, when the scope of opportunities and costs of carrying them out are better known. Enrichment grants will be awarded based on the proposed budged, and can range from $1-$500 USD.
Successful proposals will include:
- A clear goal and objectives, and the expected impacts of the project on your community
- A detailed plan of action, outlining the execution: what, who, where, when, and how
- A projected budget, including the sources for costs
- An explanation of how you will communicate your project with the greater CIEE community and to the world at-large. CIEE Teach Abroad operates TAUGHT specifically to demonstrate what teachers abroad are doing. Successful communication can include some or all of:
- Blogging
- Photos
- Videos
- Feature Articles
- Other creative outlets
A few examples:
The Valpo Surf Project is an established non-profit mentoring program in Valparaiso, Chile. In 2010, Kathryn Armstrong, an aspiring photographer, started Foto Valpo as a way of adding an artistic component to the already established VSP project. Kathryn used donated cameras as a tool to teach social awareness, environmental stewardship, and aesthetic appreciation. What artistic passion do you have that could be shared with your community?
Tessa Shaltz, a Teach in the DR Immersion participant, noticed that there was a patch of land near her house where the neighborhood kids loved to play, but it was full of rocks, random bricks, and hilly patches of land. She loved playing baseball with the kids, but often they would play in the street since the land wasn’t adequate. She proposed building a park with a small baseball field and benches for older kids and adults. Is there a public space in your community that could be transformed?
Teach in Thailand participants organized a Walk-a-Thon in their community to raise money to make a massive donation to an orphanage for children that were affected by HIV. Is there an under-privileged population in your community? How can you help?
Chile was Rocked by an 8.3 earthquake in 2010, and houses along the southern coast were destroyed by the tsunami. Teach in Chile participants traveled down to Cobquecura, Chile, the epicenter of the earthquake, to help rebuild. Is your community in the midst of recovery? How can you help?
