Teach and Be Taught! - CIEE Teach Abroad Grant Program 2011-2012

For the 2011-2012 school year, CIEE Teach Abroad is replacing the annual participant-experience contests with funded service-based or activity-based grants. In an effort to encourage teachers to contribute to the communities in which they live and work, CIEE will award 5 grants throughout the year. Applications will be selected based on potential impact of the proposal; both cultural impact and social impact will be considered.

Successful applications will demonstrate: a clear, well-developed plan of action, demonstrated cultural or social impact of the project, and projected budget.

Finally, how will you communicate your project with the greater CIEE community and to the world at-large? CIEE Teach Abroad operates TAUGHT specifically to demonstrate what teachers abroad are doing. Successful communication can include some or all of:

  • Blogging
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Feature Articles
  • Other creative outlets

The project is simply put: propose the project of your dreams, execute the project of your dreams, and tell everyone what the project of your dreams is all about and how it is going via a blog and other media sources. You have to be willing to share your project with us! We want you to make a positive difference in your local community through this specially funded opportunity provided by CIEE. No proposal is too small or too big. Examples could be organizing a fundraiser to help a local orphanage, creating an e-pal program between students in your host school and your home town school, or volunteering your time in a needy neighborhood or school outside of your host school. We want you to take the time to find what drives you to make a difference and where you feel your host community has the need for positive change.

TIPS for success:

  • Pick something you have passion for; projects can have an impact on the community in either a social or cultural context
  • Clearly articulate your objectives and relate them to results
  • Carefully construct your budget and include sources for costs
  • PROOFREAD your application!

Deadlines—Read Carefully—these are not traditional, as you have to spend a minimum amount of time in your town before you can apply!

  • Applications will be accepted AFTER you have spent 30 days in your destination, we want to be sure you can create a good project and know where you are living
  • Grants will be distributed on a rolling basis, however, distributions are likely in November, December and March, April
