compensation

All Language and Culture Assistants receive a 700€ monthly stipend (see www.xe.com for exchange rates). You will be paid monthly, in check form, by your school. You will receive each month’s check once that month is completed- for example, expect to receive your check for the month of October on November 2, 2009.

The stipend you receive each month is not considered taxable income by the Spanish government, but it is considered so by the American IRS. If you are accepted to participate on the program you will receive more information once in Spain.

CIEE Teach in Spain participants can afford reasonable but not extravagant lifestyles. No matter where you live, you’ll have some money for fun, but even a simple pleasure like a weekend trip to the beach will require some creative juggling or supplemental funds. Almost all Language and Culture Assistants teach private English classes to earn some extra money. This is legal and very widely practiced. As you’d expect, your salary will go further in rural areas where the cost of shared accommodations and food is lower than in larger towns and cities.

CIEE participants also have paid holidays around Christmas and Easter. Exact dates will not be confirmed until the school calendars are approved in September 2009. There’s always a break from December 24 - January 6 for the holidays; depending on your school there may be a few more days off around the New Year. Participants will also have Holy Week off, from March 27 - April 4, 2010.

Official provincial calendars will be available in September 2009.
