The CIEE Teach in Spain program is run in cooperation with the Andalusian regional government, the Junta de Andalucía. The CIEE program’s role is twofold: to provide the Junta de Andalucía with responsible and motivated Language and Culture Assistants, and to facilitate the teach abroad experience for those Language and Culture Assistants.
Teaching abroad is very different from studying abroad, and so is the service of CIEE as a teach abroad provider. Our goal is to help each program participant prepare for the experience that lies ahead: to provide necessary documentation in a timely fashion, explain the fundamentals of the responsibilities of a Language and Culture Assistant, orient participants to the basics of life in Andalusia, and help participants on an as-needed basis throughout the duration of the program. As opposed to studying abroad, teaching abroad is a significantly more independent experience where participants’ autonomy and decision-making skills are put to the test. After the initial CIEE orientation program, CIEE is always available for support, but group gatherings and activities are not arranged. Due to the size and scope of the Teach in Spain program, CIEE is unable to provide the kind of intensive individualized attention that is found in study abroad programs. Our role is a supporting one; we aim to give each participant the tools necessary to succeed, but each participant’s success ultimately depends on the individual.
