Program Overview

Teach English in Vietnam, and you could explore Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, the jungle, and the beaches of one of the world’s most biodiverse and interesting countries.

You’ll never be short of adventures in Vietnam, with its rich mixture of cultural influences. The nation’s roots intertwine with China, France, Japan, the United States, and include hints of Hindu culture. You’ll experience this cultural smorgasbord in many ways, from the echoes of French colonialism in the boulevards of Hanoi with the delight of baguettes and coffee at a sidewalk café, to Indian influences in the distinctive, spicy native cuisine.

The story of Vietnam is one of energy and reinvention. From a troubled past marked by geopolitical conflicts, Vietnam has in the past decade achieved one of the most impressive economic growth rates in the world. It now enjoys a promising position on the international scene, and the rising economy is fueling more interest in education.

Teach abroad in Vietnam with CIEE, and you can:

  • Explore cities and the countryside by motorbike, the country’s main mode of transport
  • Visit stunning sights, including Phong Nha-Ke Bang, the most magnificent cave in Southeast Asia; Cuc Phuong National Park, home to some of Asia's rarest wildlife; or Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its unearthly scenery
  • Be part of improving and expanding English language education
  • Plant seeds of linguistic and cultural understanding that set students on a path toward success in international business and diplomacy

Understanding Your Options

The two Teach in Vietnam programs offer similar teaching positions, pay, and benefits, but are designed for different applicants:

  • Teach in Vietnam includes additional training during orientation. Teachers participate in a TOEIC-specific workshop and receive a certificate upon completion. TOEIC stands for “Test of English for International Communication” and is an exam that many students in Vietnam take. This certification prepares you to teach students in Vietnam by allowing you to teach students how to take this exam. It can also raise your pay scale.
  • Teach in Vietnam - The Basics is designed for those who have experience teaching abroad, and/or already have TOEIC certification. Accordingly, the program fee is lower and the orientation is shorter.

Largely unscathed from decades of war, it is now going through a building boom, making it one of the more rapidly developing cities in Southeast Asia. Yet unlike many metropolises on the rise, Hanoi is evolving gracefully, harmonizing the old with the new.

When you arrive

CIEE understands that it can be overwhelming to land in an unfamiliar country with an extended stay ahead. You’ll have many questions. We’re here to help and make you feel welcome!

When you arrive, CIEE Vietnam program staff members will pick you up at the airport. Then you’ll join your fellow participants for a three-day orientation before you head off for your assignment. During this time, CIEE will take care of your housing accommodations and most meals. There are fun cultural excursions, training seminars, and training in Vietnamese to help you get started on your adventure.

Your orientation will include:

  • Survival Vietnamese language and cultural lessons
  • TEFL teaching methodology and teaching practice to reinforce your predeparture certification course
  • TOEIC-specific teaching methodology and workshop with certification (for Teach in Vietnam participants only)
  • Cultural tours and excursions

Housing

In most cases, you’ll be responsible for securing your accommodations. During orientation, we’ll provide advice on how to find housing. We’ll also help you locate a place if you need assistance. In Vietnam’s major cities, housing is very reasonably priced and not difficult to find. In some smaller cities, housing may be provided by the school to ensure that you have quality accommodations.

U.S. resident participants are covered by iNext, which supplements your private insurance to cover the cost of accidents and unexpected medical attention while abroad.
