location
Requiring no advertising, Thailand is a trip through sensual
paradise. Your travel agent will never be able to exaggerate
the wonders and beauty of this Southeast Asian country—you will inevitably
be astounded. Among the easiest travel destinations of its Asian
counterparts, Thailand is filled with aesthetic charms from the
heaven-on-earth beaches to the glittering golden chedis to the prowling
tigers in dense tropical jungles. Explore the ancient cities of
Central Thailand, where the ruins of once-great kingdoms now lie
in silent majesty, testament to a glorious past. Dive into the world’s
bluest waters searching for a different kind of wildlife than the
backpackers you encounter on shore. Meditate amid saffron-cloaked
Buddhist monks in temples adorned with mother-of-pearl inlay and
frescoes older than the Magna Carta. Throughout Thailand, mouth-watering
cuisine will be your sustenance, delightfully warm people will be
your companions, and a smile will be your currency. After all, they
don't call it “Amazing Thailand” for nothing.

teaching assignments
Teach in Thailand placements are at either Primary or Secondary schools with
the option of teaching at both levels in many institutions. Placements are available in a wide range of urban and rural locations throughout Thailand, though most placements are made in the Central and Northern provinces. Placements are driven by the demand for English-speaking teachers and the requirements of each host institution, so CIEE cannot guarantee to honor your placement requests.
A typical teaching load is 22 classes per week,
depending on the school. In addition to actual time spent in the
classroom, participants are expected to devote time to class planning,
presentations, faculty meetings, and a modicum of extra-curricular
activities. Participants should assume a 35-40 work week. In
return, you will receive:
- A minimum local salary of 15,000 Baht per month
- A free flight home from Thailand (one-way) provided by
the host institution if you successfully complete an academic year beginning in May)
orientation
All Teach in Thailand participants receive a week-long orientation in Bangkok upon arrival. Conducted by CIEE partner organization staff and local experts, the orientation program will provide you with important cultural and practical information to help you adapt to life in Thailand. Some local sightseeing, housing, and meals are included. The training course will give you the resources you need to be an effective teacher and will help you develop essential skills for teaching English as a Foreign Language in Thailand.
academic calendar
The Thai academic school year beings in May. The first semester generally finishes in September and the second begins in late October or early November. The school year usually finishes in March.
Various teaching contract durations are available in Thailand:
- Academic year, starting in May - Thai schools favor this contract
- One semester, starting in either May or October
- Two semesters, starting in October (includes a summer break)
housing
Housing is provided free of charge by host institutions
to all participants of the Teach in Thailand program. Accommodations
will be in the 'foreign visitors' quarters, usually on campus.
All accommodations have heat and some have air conditioning. Most
include a fully furnished bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, and
access to shared cooking facilities. The quality of the facilities
varies greatly from school to school and may be quite different
from what you are accustomed to in the U.S.
