School of Computer Sciences

The Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenería Informática (School of Computer Sciences) at the University of Seville is located on the Reina Mercedes Campus, about a 10 minute bus ride from the central university building (La Tabacalera). The web site is www.informatica.us.es.

This school offers the following degrees:

  • Ingeneria Informatica (Computer Science)
  • Ingeneria Tecnica en Informatica de Sistemas (Information Systems Engineering)
  • Ingeneria Tecnica en Informatica de Gestion (Information Management Engineering)

These degrees are organized in “ciclos” or cycles. The first cycle represents the first three years of study. CIEE recommends you to take classes from the second or third year of study from the first cycle. Do not consider classes from the first year as these tend to be rather basic, very large and oftentimes full.

We highly recommend that you concentrate your selection of classes from among the “optativas” (elective classes) available to majors. “Troncales” are classes which the Spanish state government requires students to take. These are large and general in nature. “Obligatorias” are classes which the University of Seville requires students to take. These are also large.

The web page of this school is rather comprehensive. For information on classes, go to the section on “Estudios y Titulaciones”. Under that section you will see the three degrees listed. Click on the area which interests you the most. When you see the list of classes, if you click on the class which looks most interesting, you will access the syllabus.

A class offered during the first semester is a FALL only class. A class offered during the second semester is a SPRING only class. There are no yearlong classes in the degree offering. Most classes also have lab work so keep that in mind when planning the number of classes you would like to take in this school.

If you have any problem in finding information on the webpage, please do not hesitate to contact resident staff.

School of Engineering

The Escuela Superior de Ingeneria is located on the Cartuja, the island in Seville where the World’s Fair took place in 1992. It is about a 20 minute bus ride from the Central University building (Tabacalera). The website is www.esi.us.es.

There are two types of engineering degrees offered at the undergraduate level at the University of Seville:

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering

These degrees consist of five years of study. CIEE recommends you to take classes from the second, third or fourth years of study. Do not consider classes from the first year as theses tend to be rather basic, very large and oftentimes full. We highly recommend that you concentrate your selection of classes from among the “optativas” (elective classes) available to majors. “Troncales” are classes which the Spanish state government requires students to take. These are large and general in nature. “Obligatorias” are classes which the University of Seville requires students to take. These are also large.

The webpage of the School is rather complete. When you enter, click on “Planes de Estudio” to find out specific information about classes. Use the scroll-down box to choose either Chemical Engineering (Plan 1998) or Industrial Engineering (Plan 1998). “Intensificaciones” refers to an area of specialization. If you have one which is listed, feel free to select it as well. The other degrees offered are similar to master’s degrees and recommended only for American senior year engineering students with at least a 3.5 GPA and almost fluent Spanish language skills.

In order to find information on class content, click on “Ordenacion Academica”. There will be several questions to answer based upon the choices. Once you get to the name of the subject, click on “programa” if you want to see the syllabus. The page is very easy to use.

Classes in this School are offered in Fall, Spring or for the entire academic year. This information is not so easy to find on the web page. If you need to confirm the semester when the class is offered, go to the home page of the Universidad de Sevilla (www.us.es), go to the section of ESTUDIOS and then click on ASIGNATURAS. Here you will have to select the degree, Plan of year if applicable, and the class listed according to year of study. Once you click on the class, you will see when the class is offered. First semester (1C) refers to a fall class and Second semester (2C) refers to a spring semester class. “Anual” refers to a yearlong class. Only yearlong students make take classes offered for the academic year.

Please pay careful attention to this information as it is fairly reliable to help you plan your studies in Seville. Most classes require laboratory or practical work, so please keep that in mind when selecting classes in this school.

School of Biology

The website of the School of Biology is located at www.bio.us.es. We only recommend that those students who are Biology majors and have a good level of Spanish take classes in any of this school’s departments. Please contact resident staff directly so that we can help you select several possible classes and secure copies of syllabi. Attendance at labs is mandatory and constitutes an important part of your final grade.

We have to obtain the department’s permission for all classes and turn in a copy of your transcript so they can check your background in biology and approve your admission. If you are interested in taking a class in the School of Biology, you will need to let CIEE resident staff know as soon as possible. Once we know you are interested, we can contact the class professors so that you can obtain the necessary permission to enroll.

School of Physics

The website of the School of Physics is located at www.us.es/fisica. Admission is only recommended for Physics majors with a good level of Spanish. Some 1st and 2nd year classes are semester-long, but the majority are yearlong. All of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th year classes are semester long. Please contact resident staff directly so that we can help you select several possible classes and secure copies of syllabi.
