Beijing – Minzu University of China
ethnic identity + cultural studies
The Ethnic Identity and Cultural Studies study abroad program in Beijing, China is designed for students with 0-4 semesters of Chinese, Tibetan or Uyghur language study and an interest in exploring China’s ethnic minorities and cultural identity. This program is ideal for students majoring in the social sciences with an interest in multi-ethnic China and modern life in Beijing and rural ethnic areas of China.
Beijing – Peking University
advanced chinese studies
This program is designed for students interested in using their superior level of Chinese to study international affairs, business, history, or Chinese literature alongside Chinese students. The Advanced Chinese Studies program offered at the CIEE Study Center at Peking University supports students in enrolling in one of four schools or departments both administratively and intellectually. Students learn about important topics in Chinese from a Chinese perspective, while developing professional writing and research skills in Chinese.

The CIEE Study Center at Peking University is one of the oldest and most recognized intensive Chinese language programs. The Peking University Center for Teaching Chinese houses over eight different language levels and many other elective courses that benefit the specific needs of each student. Intensive language courses coupled with individual language tutorials, diversified field trips, modern housing facilities, and experienced on-site staff, make the CIEE Study Center in Beijing an incredible place to study and learn cross-cultural skills under the auspices of the most famous university in China.
summer intensive chinese language
The program at Peking University is designed for students who have studied one to three years of college-level Mandarin Chinese and who wish to further develop their language skills and cross-cultural training within a beautiful university campus in Beijing. Students are divided into four levels for intensive Mandarin language training: intermediate, high intermediate, advanced I, and advanced II. CIEE students are partnered with a Peking University student upon arrival to facilitate cross-cultural discussion and individual tutoring of the Chinese language. The program supplements the language training with weekly excursions to various areas in Beijing and has an experienced on-site director to support each student.
Nanjing – Nanjing University

This program is designed for students with two to six semesters of college-level Mandarin Chinese and an interest in Chinese studies who wish to immerse themselves in a more traditional and accessible locale against the backdrop of a large developing Chinese city.
Shanghai – East China Normal University

This program is designed for students with 4-7 semesters of Mandarin Chinese to develop advanced communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese through small classes, tutors, and language clinics; understand contemporary economic and political issues affecting China and the affects of China as a rising power in the world today; and apply skills learned in the classroom to understand the environment outside through independent fieldwork and volunteer opportunities.

The program offers Chinese language training at both standard and intensive levels coupled with coursework, taught in English, in business, marketing, economics, international relations, and area studies. Students learn about contemporary business issues affecting China, and the affects of China as a rising power in the business world today.

This program is designed for students with no Chinese language background and those who have studied Chinese for several semesters. The program offers Chinese language training at both standard and intensive levels coupled with coursework, taught in English, in global studies,
economics, international relations, and area studies.
summer accelerated chinese language
This summer language program is designed for Intermediate and Advanced Chinese language students interested in an accelerated language program where students accomplish one year of Chinese language training through intensive study both in the classroom and structured homework exercises. The language classes are small, with an average of four students; classes are typically co-taught by head language instructors and assistant language instructors who focus on accuracy and consistency of pronunciation through daily drills and other exercises. Students also take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking only Chinese in the Chinese classroom building and to the resident staff, language teachers, and host family or Chinese roommate.

The summer program is designed for students who wish to immerse themselves in the exciting, rapidly developing economic engine of China that is Shanghai. Students take intensive Chinese language course work in small classes, while also attending a weekly seminar on the historic and modern roles of Shanghai in China's international relations. The summer program encourages beginner through advanced level language students to apply.
Taipei - National Chengchi University

This program is ideal for career-minded students who wish to experience an authentic university environment in Taiwan, choose from a wide array of content courses taught in Chinese or English—many of which are not available in mainland China. Students also learn Chinese through CIEE-designed language classes that emphasize the use of modern pedagogy, technology, and traditional Chinese characters.
