Live a lively summer. Indulge a passion, explore a fascination, or challenge the status quo—of the wide world or your personal routine. Spend summer days in a cloud forest or in a semi-rural health clinic. Study business, natural or social sciences, humanities—and everything in between. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to go abroad for a full semester, CIEE programs that run from two to eight weeks fit into any summer schedule. Most of our programs don’t have a language prerequisite, so you can go even if you don’t know any language but English. Get a summer’s worth of international experience and course credit on a CIEE program.

But which? Your options are vast, and very different. You can dive into the Caribbean Sea to do field work in marine ecology, tropical ecology, conservation. Forcus on the regional healthcare challenges—and possible solutions—in either Argentina, Botswana, or the Dominican Republic. Understand the tradition of social acceptance in Amsterdam. Catch on to Chinese characters in Beijing. Intern with a Spanish company in Sevilla. Participate in a traveling seminar in Transylvania, learning from classroom lectures, on-site talks, and your own observations. How should you think about studying this summer? CIEE programs are designed to help you get the most out of your experience, and we’ll help you find one that’s right for you.

a summer-sized bite
Our 28 summer programs are very different from one another, but all have one thing in common: short, intensive study of one or two subjects that lead to a personal understanding of both the coursework and the local culture. Some of our programs center on the study of the local society and culture with courses in English. Many give you the chance to work on your language skills while gaining that cultural understanding. Others focus on very specific topics, like science or business, and may or may not involve language study.

CIEE summer programs range from two to eight weeks. For some, you can choose between one, two, or even three sessions (or participate in as many as you like). So, think of something you’ve always wanted to learn, somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, or some goal you’ve always wanted to fulfill, and get your study abroad start or your summer abroad fix. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be back (to the same place or a new one) next semester.

dive into the culture
Satisfy your curiosity on CIEE programs that center on local culture and society. If a place captures your imagination, see if the courses we offer interest you as well. On most programs, all students take one course—either the program’s core course or one of two or three electives. That course is often multidisciplinary—bringing in historical, sociological, artistic, and economic perspectives—and always taught in English. For example, you can study the history and culture of modern Ireland, culturally-layered Morocco, mosaic-filled Portugal. Nation-building in Cambodia. Contemporary Dutch social policy. Multiculturalism in Paris. The art and architecture of Prague. South Africa's evolving politics and economics. Or any number of subjects in Japanese or Korean culture, like politics, theater, or religion. The CIEE field seminar in Transylvania lets you walk the path of the past and present, traveling a specially-designed itinerary that combines targeted lectures by professors and local experts with travel and site visits. Optional Czech, French, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese language courses are available if you want to learn to communicate better with the world around you.

learn the language
Other CIEE programs are designed to help you begin or improve your language skills while immersing you in the local culture both inside and outside the classroom. If you want to study Spanish, you have choices. Build your beginner, intermediate, or advanced skills on the shores of the Mediterranean in Alicante, in the Andalusian capital of Sevilla, or in culturally-forward Barcelona. Cultivate your language ability—whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced speaker—while considering the effects of globalization, human migration, and tourism in Palma de Mallorca. Use your intermediate Spanish skills to study local business, culture, and history in Alcalá de Henares. Learn beginner or intermediate Spanish by using it around town in real local environments on a community-based Spanish program in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Pick up—or polish—your Portuguese skills in African-influenced Salvador da Bahia in northern Brazil, or cross the Atlantic back to Lisboa and perfect them in Portugal. Improve your intermediate Russian in St. Petersburg while learning about Russian film and music. Concentrate on your Mandarin Chinese in Beijing with courses in reading and speaking. Some programs have language prerequisites and others don’t, so find the programs that are appropriate for your level.

specialize, specialize, specialize
What can you study abroad over the summer? You may be surprised. Science, business, and community health are all possibilities. For some of these programs, you need advanced language skills; for others, you can be an absolute beginner, so check prerequisites to understand your options.

If you’ve studied biology or ecology, you can combine classwork with fieldwork in Monteverde, Costa Rica or Bonaire in the Southern Caribbean. In Bonaire, you’ll study ecology and scuba dive with local experts to observe nearby tropical marine life. Or live in a biological station in a cloud forest in Monteverde, studying ecology and conservation and spending half your time off-site exploring the ecosystem. See how local communities face regional health issues in the Dominican Republic, Argentina, or Botswana— through classwork, fieldwork, and community service. Or learn about business in a different part of the world with business courses taught in English in Shanghai and Brussels. Internships in Sevilla and Brussels give you the chance to tune up your business vocabulary and cultural understanding by working at an international company. In Brussels, you can also choose to study communications, international relations, or European identity.
