Your Stories + Photos - Photo Contest Winners

CIEE Spring 2007 Photo Contest

CIEE is thrilled to share the results of our most recent photo contest.

We received wonderful entries this cycle, so the decision was tough! All of the photos entered displayed an amazing range of experiences and adventures that students on CIEE programs get to enjoy. The quality of the photos and the breadth of subject matter truly made this year a very hard year to judge.

We now have TWO categories for the participant photo contest, Student Interaction and most Artistic Image.

Our first category includes a first, second, and third place winner for creative and inspiring photos that show Student Interaction with the host community; where they lived and studied – their dorm, homestay, campus, and classrooms; and their travels. You can view these images below (click on them to view larger versions).

Our second category includes one overall winner for the most Artistic Image from among the photos that were submitted. Click here to view the winner and honorable mentions.

Overall Winner

"Habitat for Humanity"
Lisa Goldman
George Washington University
CIEE Study Center in Stellenbosch, South Africa

During the last week of my stay in Stellenbosch, I participated in Habitat for Humanity in the township Mfuleni, which is located near Cape Town. The locals in Mfuleni were some of the most amazing, beautiful, and appreciative people that I have ever met. At the time, many public schools throughout the country were closed because the teachers were on strike, so the younger kids came to hang out with us at the sites. At first, I felt pretty nervous and shy; only a handful of the kids spoke English and I couldn't even pronounce the few words in Xhosa and Afrikaans that I knew. We found ways to talk without words, but with smiles and laughter. –Lisa Goldman

Second Place

"Knuckles"
Krista Erickson
Pacific Lutheran University
CIEE Study Center in Dakar, Senegal

Two of my friends and I decided that we would embark on a rural southeast Senegal adventure. We traveled as far as Kedougou, up into the hills where the Bedik villages are located. This picture was taken at the village of Iwol, one of the bigger villages in the area. All of the kids of the village came out to meet us and followed us around on our tour. Because not all of the children spoke French, it was easier to communicate through connections made with hand gestures or facial expressions. What I love about this picture, and what is so apparent but so subtle, are the differences between the Bedik child and I (our age, our height, our race), but in that one physical connection made, none of those differences matter; we're at the same place, at the same time, doing the exact same thing, and having fun. –Krista Erickson

Third Place

"Check Out My Ride!"
Samantha Lee
The University of Texas at Austin
CIEE Study Center in Beijing, China

This picture was taken when I was traveling around by myself in Yunnan. This was outside of Lijiang. I had decided to go see Yulongxueshan and when we were coming down from the mountain we saw the yaks in the water. I decided I wanted to ride one around for a while so I paid this guy to take me around on his yak. It was a lot of fun. The yaks were huge! –Samantha Lee
