CIEE Fall 2008 Photo Contest
CIEE is delighted to share the results of our most recent photo contest, which included two categories: Student Interaction and Artistic Image.
We received many fantastic entries from the fall 2008 alumni, and the judging was tough! All of the pictures entered displayed a wonderful range of experiences and adventures that students on CIEE programs get to enjoy. The quality of the photos and the breadth of subject matter truly made the staff at CIEE comment about how talented our students are.
Our first category includes an overall winner for creative and inspiring photos that show Student Interaction with the host community; where they lived and studied—their dorm, homestay, campus, and classrooms; and their travels. "The Chief and I "

While I was in Ghana I was lucky enough to have met a chief of a small village outside the city of Ho. He was kind enough to allow me to accompany him in a traditional Yam festival, that happens near his village every year. He welcomed me into his village for a weekend and I was able to go through all the traditional customs. Before the Festival the chief and the elders (seen in the photo), allowed me to join in the traditional meal before the festival. They served me Bunku (dough type meal) and goat and fish stew, it was definitely a meal that I will never forget. After the traditional meal the local village woman (who spoke no English) dressed me in traditional Kente cloth and even made me sandals out of goatskin. After I was appropriately dressed I had one of the women take the picture so I would always remember the time when I met an unlikely friend who welcomed me into his home. The stay in the village was one of the highlights of my stay in Ghana and was a weekend I will never forget.

"Ndikhokele Bawo"

During my semester at the University of Cape Town, I was a member of the Choir for Africa, a group formed to celebrate traditional Xhosa and Zulu folk music. This picture was taken during a performance of “Ndikhokele Bawo,” a gospel song about God giving us hope and leading us through challenging times. An alum of the choir joined us to sing a solo, and the result was a moving and unforgettable performance.

This was a picture taken with two adorable sisters from my volunteer job at the YMCA in Santiago. I loved playing games with them, hugging them, and letting them play with my hair every day I volunteered.
