CIEE Fall 2007 Photo Contest
CIEE is thrilled to share the results of our most recent photo contest.
We received wonderful entries this cycle, so the decision was tough! All of the photos entered displayed an amazing range of experiences and adventures that students on CIEE programs get to enjoy. The quality of the photos and the breadth of subject matter truly made this year a very hard year to judge. We now have TWO categories for the participant photo contest, Student Interaction and most Artistic Image.
Our first category includes a first, second, and third place winner for creative and inspiring photos that show Student Interaction with the host community; where they lived and studied – their dorm, homestay, campus, and classrooms; and their travels. You can view these images below (click on them to view larger versions).
Our second category includes one overall winner for the most Artistic Image from among the photos that were submitted. Click here to view the winner and honorable mentions.
Overall Winner

"On the President's Pier"
Garret Halbach
Arizona State University, Tempe
CIEE Study Center in Dakar, Senegal
Chris and I arrived at our rural stay host family too late in the day to assist anyone with work, so our host siblings were instructed to give us a tour of the village. Literally two doors down was the family home of the first president of Senegal, Leopold Senghor. Excitedly, we were led around back to see the memorial to the poet-president and to walk out onto the pier to take in the sprawling Sine-Saloum delta. As we turned back, Chris helped one little guy to work up the courage to return across the pier. I'm not sure if we ever knew if he was a host sibling or just one of the many exuberant children we met that week in Djilor.
Second Place

"Wadi Rum from Atop a Camel"
Christina Bucton
Point Loma Nazarene University
CIEE Study Center in Amman, Jordan
It was our second day in Wadi Rum on a 3-day CIEE excursion in late September 2007, and our group of over 60 had just set out on a 3-hour camel ride through the desert from our camp to the 7 pillars of wisdom rock formation of Lawrence of Arabia fame and the visitor's center. We made quite the caravan, combined with Bedouin boys leading our camels and a few pickup trucks, hence the tire marks. I like the contrasts with going by foot, camel, and truck through the ancient routes people have traversed for thousands of years. It was the quintissential "tourist in Jordan" experience, but it felt wonderful to be slowly carried through the desert so we could soak in the towering, iconic rust-colored rocks amidst brush-speckled copper sand. As long as my camel wasn't taking me on detours or stopping to munch on every bush, that is.
Third Place

"On Her Level"
Allison Barr
Santa Clara University
CIEE Study Center in Accra, Ghana
This picture was taken just outside of Ghana's capital city of Accra, at a small fishing village on the coast called La. My Twi professor at Ashesi University took our CIEE group, eight in total, into the village so we could witness first-hand what it's like to be part of a small, independent fishing community. The children were all helping their fathers and older brothers bring in the boats and the day's catch, and most of the younger kids had never seen light skin before. The little girl in this photo was particularly terrified of our group. I beckoned her to come over, and had the most delightful silent conversation with her, since she did not speak English. When I had to go, she threw her arms around my back and then ran into the hut behind her, where her mother was waiting. It was one of the most touching moments I experienced in my entire trip to Ghana.
