Culture through sport: Super 14 Rugby – CIEE students watch a rugby match at the nation’s most famous rugby venue, Newlands Stadium

Rugby in South AfricaBaseball and apple pie are to some communities in the USA as rugby and boerewors (sausage) are to others in South Africa. CIEE Stellenbosch students joined their CIEE counterparts from UCT for a taste of both rugby and boerewors on Friday, February 29 when they attended a match at South Africa’s most famous rugby venue, Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. The “Super 14 Series” match pitted the Stormers (our local rugby side) against the Crusaders from New Zealand. Although our local team lost by a score of 22-0, the match was an excellent opportunity to see some of our WorldChampion SA Rugby players in-action while also experiencing the vibe in the stands—where some would argue the real cultural experience takes place.
