About Seoul

South Korea, one of the “economic dragons” in Asia, is a country that embraces both a modern and traditional way of life. The capital of Seoul has many museums, galleries, theaters, and cultural venues, as well as historic monuments and sites. These give students an historical perspective into Korea’s dynastic periods, which established the intellectual and cultural foundation for modern Korean society. At the same time, Seoul offers many stores filled with the latest in mobile technologies, fashion, and “K-pop” music, providing a great backdrop to learn about modern youth culture in Asia.

Where You'll Study

Yonsei University

The CIEE Study Center is based at Yonsei University, the most prestigious private institution of higher education in Korea. Founded in 1885, the school has 18 graduate schools, 21 colleges, and a student population of over 30,000, which includes more than 1,000 students from 20 countries. The University is located less than 20 minutes from downtown Seoul on a large sprawling campus that is hilly and forested. A full range of sporting facilities, including a fitness center, swimming pool, gymnasium, and basketball and tennis courts, are available.

Thoughts From Abroad

I have spent over half my adult life in Korea, a land of contrasts and harmony with its pleasant blending of historic majesty and bustling modernity, soaring mountains and wide plains, traditional craftsmen and high-tech industries. Seoul, its capital and the city I now call home, is both ancient and youthful. It is a dynamic, fascinating city that has been the capital of Korea for over 600 years. Modern high-rise buildings coexist with ancient palaces and shrines. Men and women dressed in Korean traditional garments brush shoulders with those clad in everything from business suits and well-worn jeans to rock fashions and designer creations. The heart of Korea’s culture and education, as well as its politics and economics, Seoul is a wonderful place to spend your summer. Koreans take great pride in their language and culture and are happy to help others learn about their customs and traditions, music and art, and history and development.

Come study with us in Seoul, and you’ll not only learn firsthand about the city of Seoul, but also about the dynamic country of Korea and its remarkable people. Come experience Korea. Come study, learn, and enjoy!

— Suzanne Crowder Han, Resident Director
