A city with a rich and celebrated history, London is the hub of British business and government and one of the world’s most important cultural centers. The South Bank Complex, with the National Theater, Royal Festival Hall, and National Film Theater, can be reached easily by bus or railway, as can the theaters of the West End and Shakespeare’s Globe, as well as countless museums and galleries. Where You'll Study

School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

Founded in 1916, the School of Oriental and African Studies is part of the University of London. SOAS is comprised of about 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 100 countries. Students choose courses in the social sciences and humanities all with a focus on a region in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East. The main academic building is located in Russell Square in the Bloomsbury section of London, walking distance to Covent Garden and the West End, and connected by tube to the rest of London.

Thoughts From Abroad

London attracts more overseas visitors than Las Vegas, New York, and Sydney combined. There are more languages spoken in London than in any other city in the world. The School of Oriental and African Studies welcomes students from all over the world, particularly those with an international frame of mind. SOAS is the only higher education institution in the UK specializing in the study of Asia, Africa, and the Near and Middle East. Its two campuses are located in the heart of London and about 20 minutes walking distance from one another. While SOAS has grown rapidly, it retains a friendly atmosphere and provides personal attention that students require. The cosmopolitan nature is both a challenging and rewarding experience which enables students to look at their own culture from a fresh perspective.

Staff Bios

Heralding from Edinburgh, Scotland, Resident Director James Cameron Cooper studied International Business Administration at the European University in Athens, Greece. He has more than ten years of experience providing student services in International Education gained working throughout Europe and America. His extensive knowledge of Europe and in particular London provides an invaluable resource for students. The office of the CIEE Resident Director is located at the Foundation for International Education in the South Kensington area of the city, which is within easy reach for all students on the program. The CIEE Academic Advisor in London, Dr.Julie Andreshak-Behrman, is also available to counsel students on academic issues from her office at the same location.

Originally from New York, Assistant Resident Director Elizabeth Lippolis studied communications at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. She has lived and worked with American study abroad students in London since 2002 and is familiar with cultural adjustment and living abroad. Now a resident of East London, Elizabeth has traveled extensively throughout the UK and Europe, providing a wealth of information for CIEE students.

    This breakdown has been prepared from the program budget for the purpose of calculating eligibility for financial aid. During the course of program operations, actual figures may vary. It should not, therefore, be used as a basis for calculation of refunds. CIEE reserves the right to adjust fees at any time.
