New Semester Programs–Opening Spring 2009

Perth, Australia
CIEE Study Center at Murdoch University
[Sustainability and the Environment]

This new program at the well-established CIEE Study Center in Perth is designed for students interested in issues of sustainability. Coursework includes: sustainability studies, public policy, planning, legal studies, environmental science, and the biological sciences. One of the many strengths of the program is the opportunity for students to take courses that teach them to be well-versed in both the scientific component as well as public policy issues in Western Australia–a region that due to its geographic isolation and depleting natural resources is well-advanced in the field of sustainable development and policy making. Students directly enroll in courses at Murdoch University alongside local students; volunteer in conservation-related fields; and join CIEE staff for educational excursions to locations pertinent to the program’s mission.

Beijing, China
CIEE Study Center at Peking University
[Advanced Chinese Studies]

The Advanced Chinese Studies program is designed to provide support for superior language students interested in taking coursework completely in Chinese alongside Chinese peers. Students enroll directly in one of the following departments at Peking University based on their academic interest: Chinese Language and Literature, History, International Studies, or The Guanghua School of Management. Courses are supplemented by weekly tutorials with peer tutors; on-campus, homestay, or independent housing options; and research opportunities. Due to the dates of the Chinese academic calendar, students may enroll for the spring semester or the entire academic year only.

Brussels, Belgium
CIEE Study Center at Université Libre de Bruxelles
[Advanced Liberal Arts]

The Advanced Liberal Arts program is designed for students with upper-level French language skills who want the challenge of direct matriculation at a French-speaking university. The program is particularly well-suited for those with an interest in language, literature, philosophy, and history. The semester core course on Belgian history is supplemented by seminars led by the CIEE Resident Director and direct enrollment courses at the University in a wide variety of disciplines. A ULB student mentor helps CIEE students integrate into the Belgian university environment and life in Belgium.

Monteverde, Costa Rica
CIEE Study Center
[Sustainability and the Environment]

The CIEE Study Center in Monteverde has a long tradition of high academic quality in the natural sciences, and has developed the Sustainability and the Environment program for environmental studies and science-related majors. Professors prepare students in the classroom and accompany students on field trips with emphasis placed on hands-on field observation of conservation and development projects throughout Costa Rica and parts of Nicaragua as well as human-nature interactions and their application to the conservation of nature, social justice, national security, and the economy. While classes are taught in English, students learn or improve their Spanish language skills in beginning through advanced level Spanish language courses.

Managua, Nicaragua
CIEE Study Center at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua
[Liberal Arts]

Nicaragua offers students an off-the-beaten track study abroad option in the heart of Central America and the developing world. While broad in academic scope, the new Liberal Arts program is particularly appropriate for students with advanced Spanish language skills and an interest in social sciences, social justice, and development studies. The program enables participants to refine their Spanish language skills through an intensive Spanish language course; to enhance their understanding of contemporary Nicaraguan society through the CIEE core course Revolution and Neoliberal Reform in Nicaragua; and to take courses in a wide variety of academic interests through direct matriculation at the Universidad. A two-week intensive language course precedes the regular semester to ensure student’s Spanish levels are appropriate for direct matriculation.

New Semester Programs–Opening Fall 2009

Uppsala, Sweden
CIEE Study Center at Uppsala University
[Arts and Sciences]

The goals of the Arts and Sciences program are for students to develop an understanding of Swedish society and culture while enrolling in a variety of academic courses at one of the premier universities in Scandinavia. Through coursework at Uppsala University, participation in University activities, and program excursions and community engagement opportunities, students gain valuable insight into Sweden’s past and present. Primary instruction is in Swedish; however there is an extensive range of courses offered in English in business, natural and physical sciences, information technology, social science, and humanities.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
CIEE Study Center at the University of
Dar es Salaam
[Arts and Sciences]

The Arts and Sciences program at the University of Dar es Salaam has a wide range of academic offerings. The program is designed for students to gain an understanding of contemporary Tanzania; to understand Tanzania’s role in East Africa; and to explore diverse African perspectives through direct matriculation in University courses. CIEE students enroll in a semester-long Kiswahili language course, the Kiswahili Language and Culture Practicum, and take four regular university courses taught in English, one of which has a Tanzanian or East African focus. The Kiswahili Language and Culture Practicum offers students a unique academic experience including local visits to historical and cultural sites, community-based learning projects, and language practice.

New Summer Programs–Opening Summer 2009

Gaborone, Botswana
CIEE Study Center at the University of Botswana
[Community Public Health]

The Community Public Health program is designed for students interested in a case study focused on community and environmental health issues in a developing nation. This seven-week CIEE summer program consists of coursework, a Setswana language and culture practicum, and a weeklong field placement in a rural clinic where students are paired up with a local medical staff member who will act as a mentor and cultural informant, and live with a local host family. Students also engage in an urban community service practicum as part of the academic curriculum.

Lisbon, Portugal
CIEE Study Center at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa
[Language and Culture]

The new Language and Culture summer program focuses on two interwoven areas: Portuguese language and Portuguese culture and history. Special emphasis is placed on Lisbon, considered within a broad global context. The goals of the program are to develop students’ Portuguese language skills and to expose them to Portuguese culture through a brief but intensive immersion experience. Students study Portuguese language or take a Portuguese culture course taught in English. All classes include experiential activities and field visits. Living in a residencia shared with Portuguese and other international students and city-based cultural and social activities and weekend excursions give students a familiarity with Portuguese history, culture, and current affairs.
