CIEE Resident Director Receives National Book Award
Maria Filomena González Canalda, Resident Director of the Liberal Arts program at the CIEE Study Center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, recently published a book entitled, “Los Gavilleros, 1904-1916”, which documents and discusses the early organizational years of the gavillero movement, a nascent resistance group, prior to the U.S. occupation on the island in the early part of the 20th century. On May 27, 2009 in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Ministry of Culture announced the annual prizes for literature and music among which her publication received the prize for Historical Documentation. CIEE congratulates Maria Filomena on this wonderful honor.
CIEE IFDS French Program Featured in Reuters Blog
We are pleased to announce that the 2009 International Faculty Development Seminar Religious Diversity and Conflict in France has been featured In the June 8th Reuters Blog ‘French, U.S. Imams Talk About Being Muslim Military Chaplains’.
The seminar, running for eight days in early June, incorporates talks by major scholars of religion and society with a focus on daily life (schools, hospitals, prisons, and the army) through the perspective of the chaplain. In 2009, four U.S. chaplains representing various religions were able to participate due to the support of the U.S Embassy in Paris. Another seminar on religious diversity in France will run in the summer of 2010. Please check www.ciee.org/IFDS in early July for 2010 IFDS listings.
