Bath House Health Project
Village People Project
CIEE Study Center in Shanghai, China
Following a similarly successful project in Xifeng, this project built a bathhouse in Sanquan, a remote and impoverished village in the Shaanxi Province in northwest China. The project addressed two vital issues: health and women’s status. Formerly, “villagers would typically shower once a year.” The lack of warm running water has historically had adverse effects on villagers’ health, particularly women’s health. Also, the bathhouse provides new economic and social opportunities for some of the more vulnerable villagers (the very old and young, and women). CIEE students were involved in the assessment of the success of the project (data collection and reporting), as well as experiencing the daily operations during a village visit. CIEE Shanghai looks forward to future service learning collaboration with the Village People Project.
