"My host brother and I enjoying a rugby game."
Tom London
George Washington University
Tokyo, Japan
During my year-long study abroad experience I was placed in a home stay with the Kushida family, which coincidentally turned out to be my favorite aspect of my time in Japan. They are some of the nicest people I've ever met and treated me as one of their own.
I played rugby throughout high school and it turned out that my host-brother, Kengo (age 9), absolutely loves it. He plays on a local team in their town outside of Tokyo and I used to go to his practices and eventually someone invited me to play with the adult team. It was essentially composed of guys in their 30s to 60s playing Sunday mornings. It was an absolute blast and my host family was able to see that I, as well as their son, really enjoyed the game. So they decided to take us to a tournament match between New Zealand and Australia. I grew up in England but this was the best live game I had ever seen, the level of play was incredible. I think my host brother and I were joking around during half-time or after the game and my host mom snapped this photo of us.
Overall Winner — Educational
"A dialogue with a rural Muslim family in Morrocco through a translator. We were the second group of Americans they ever met."
Philip Martin
The Pennsylvania State University
Seville, Spain
During a trip to Morocco with a group of study abroad students I had the amazing opportunity to eat a meal in the home of a rural Moroccan family and then have a dialogue with them through a translator. I was appointed as our group's photographer since our group didn't want to appear like American tourists.
Our group was only the second group of Americans the family had ever met which made for a very authentic conversation in which we attempted to better understand each other's cultures. We discussed everything from government, to economic systems, to the role of religion in everyday life. My peers and I left the dialogue better understanding life in rural Morocco. We learned many ways in which our two cultures were similar and appreciated the things which made them unique. I always tell people back home that this moment was the most memorable cultural exchange I had from studying abroad.
