CIEE Spring & Summer 2009 Photo Contest
CIEE is delighted to share the results of our most recent photo contest, which included two categories: Student Interaction and Artistic Image.
Our first category includes an overall winner for creative and inspiring photos that show Student Interaction with the host community; where they lived and studied—their dorm, homestay, campus, and classrooms; and their travels. You can view this image below, along with several incredible photos that deserve to receive an honorable mention. (Click on the images to view larger versions).
Our second category includes one winner for the most Artistic Image from among the photos that were submitted. Click here to view the winner and honorable mentions.
Overall Winner
"Tying the spirit to the body - a Thai welcoming ritual"
Alexandra Scott
Georgetown University
study thailand - khon kaen
The hand receiving the string belongs to one of my host fathers, an incredibly amazing man who was a leader in the TNP+, a local Thai NGO working to reduce stigma and raise awareness around HIV/AIDS. The other hand belongs to his father. He was tying the string around his son's wrist to hold his spirit to his body as it is believed that when one is away from his or her home, their spirit remains at home unless it is tied to them. This ritual became one of my favorite parts of my experience in Thailand. Every community we went to, we would exchange these strings, tying them to our friends and families wrists to protect them and ensure their spirit stayed with them. By the end of the semester, we were up to our elbows in strings!
