CIEE Fall 2009 Photo Contest
CIEE is delighted to share the results of our most recent photo contest, which included two categories: Student Interaction and Artistic Image.
Our first category includes an overall winner for creative and inspiring photos that show Student Interaction with the host community; where they lived and studied—their dorm, homestay, campus, and classrooms; and their travels. "Eating Ugali"

While studying at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, some fellow CIEE students and I had met a local student. He invited us to come to his house and meet his grandmother. We accepted his offer and found ourselves in the midst of a very welcoming community.
Our new friend took us down the dirt streets of his neighborhood, greeting everyone and showing off his new American friends. We greeted his grandmother and were then invited to his aunt's house where the family taught us how to cook ugali.
We each took turns attempting to stir the white corn flower and water mixture, but none of us did it with the same grace of the aunt. Once the food was ready we all sat on the mat laid out on the ground and crowded around the plate. Seeing an opportunity for a picture, I jumped up to capture the moment with everyone reaching in, exemplifying the one and only way to eat ugali!
