Overall Winner
"Scavenging the Landfill" Katherine Cahn Georgetown University Khon Kaen, Thailand
The Khombone Noy Landfill in Khon Kaen receives 200 tons of trash per day. A community began developing there over 30 years ago; today, the village includes over 60 homes, housing a population of 220. Most of these individuals are scavengers.
As they search for glass, metal, and plastic goods, scavengers must sort through rotting food, bags of hair clippings, and other waste products. Pollution of the water and soil has made the land around the landfill infertile, and villagers are no longer able to grow food.
Often working 14 hour days, many villagers come to the landfill at night when it is less crowded and temperatures are lower. In the dark, scavengers must be careful to avoid the trucks driving in, as drivers cannot see them. Those working in the landfill collect an average of 300 kg of trash per person per day; their work has already extended the life of the landfill by 8 years.
