About the City
About The City
Seville has its origins in the trade routes controlled by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. Romans, Goths, Muslims, and Christians established their capital here before it became the most important city in Southern Europe and gateway to the Americas in the 16th century. The commercial hub of its region, the city preserves many traces of its past and traditions. With fewer than 800,000 residents, Seville offers a large variety of cultural activities that range from the Bienal of Flamenco and the European Film Festival to alternative theater venues and one of the most respected bullrings in the world.

Where You'll Study
Where You'll Study
CIEE STUDY CENTER
The CIEE Study Center is located in a beautifully renovated Sevillano palace built in 1725. It is centrally located, close to the Puerta de la Carne, and is a 10-minute walk from the main Universidad de Sevilla building (Tabacalera). Housed in the CIEE Study Center are classrooms, computer room, student services, and CIEE administration. CIEE professors also have an office in the Study Center, so that students may speak with them privately about issues related to their progress in class.
Housing & Meals
Housing & Meals
Homestays are the overwhelming preference of students due to the cultural and linguistic opportunities that they provide. Students have their own room and are placed on an individual basis. However, those students who specifically wish to share housing may request to live with another program participant, but always with the condition that each student has their own separate bedroom. All meals and laundry privileges are provided.
Given the size of the city, all students should expect to use public transportation (metro, tram, bus, or public bike rental) to commute from their place of residence to their classes.
Orientations
Orientations
You'll begin your study abroad experience in Seville even before leaving home by participating in a CIEE online pre-departure orientation. Meeting with students online, the resident coordinators share information about the program and site, highlighting issues that alumni have said are important, and giving you time to ask questions. The online orientation allows you to connect with others in the group, reflect on what you want to get out of the program, and learn what others in the group would like to accomplish. CIEE’s aim for the pre-departure orientation is simple—to help you understand more about the program, and identify your objectives so that you arrive well-informed and return home having made significant progress towards your goals.
The mandatory orientation session conducted in Seville at the beginning of the program will introduce you to the country, culture, and academic program, and provide practical information about living in Spain. It includes both structured activities and independent sightseeing. Ongoing support is provided by CIEE staff on an individual and group basis throughout the program.
Internet
Internet
You are encouraged to bring a wireless-enabled laptop. All housing options have Internet connections, while the CIEE Study Center offers wireless access. Computers at the CIEE Study Center are also available for academic purposes.
Culture
Culture
The academic study abroad program is supplemented with field trips and excursions to points of interest in Seville and Spain, and highlight topics covered in class. Prospective day excursions may include trips to Córdoba, Aracena, and Cádiz. Students will also travel to different cities of Andalusia for one weekend each session. These may include trips to Granada, Malaga, or Cádiz.
INTERCAMBIOS
A conversation exchange program with Spanish students is an important part of the program. Intercambios give you the chance to practice what you are learning in language courses, as well as help you become more integrated into Spanish student life and into the life and culture of Seville.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Study abroad students have the opportunity to work with children and the elderly, as well as other humanitarian associations. Students may also become involved in such international organizations as Amnesty International. Volunteer teaching opportunities in local schools are also available for future teachers.
Academics
Academics
This study abroad program is designed for students considering a career in any communication environment. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in a multifaceted academic and professional environment. CIEE guarantees the social and cultural immersion of participants in the host society via specialized projects and extra-curricular activities.
ONLINE PLACEMENT EXAM
Prior to departure for Seville, all study abroad students are required to take a CIEE online placement exam. The purpose of this exam is to determine the student’s level of Spanish for appropriate placement in language courses. Students should take this exam seriously, as placement in many upper-level courses depends upon a high online placement exam score.
WRITING CENTER AND TUTORIALS
CIEE has a writing center staffed by language professors and Spanish students majoring in Spanish philology. CIEE organizes tutorials for students to help them in reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking. Tutorials focusing on the content of regular university courses are also offered each semester. Spanish classmates and graduate students help incoming students with their courses at the University. Students may request personal tutors to help them keep up with the work related to these classes.
Academic Culture
All courses meet daily, Monday through Friday, for three hours. Additional cultural activities may be scheduled in the afternoon. The academic calendar includes dates for obligatory trips scheduled out of Seville. These hands-on learning experiences contribute greatly to the student’s experience abroad. Instruction is interactive and dynamic. Many lectures take place in situ, so that the student can feel a part of the fascinating culture they are studying.
Students will have one “free day” during each session, either a Monday or Friday, to allow for individual travel. Dates will be provided prior to departure. While extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute greatly to the student’s overall European experience, attendance is mandatory for both classes and required events. Early departure for, or late return from, personal trips on weekends is not permitted. Any extended travel should take place prior to the start of the program or upon completion of the program.
NATURE OF CLASSES
CIEE courses are with CIEE study abroad students.
CIEE COMMUNITY LANGUAGE COMMITMENT
Students take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking Spanish at all times (except in emergencies). This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Spanish language proficiency and understanding of Spanish society.
GRADING SYSTEM
In CIEE courses, students are graded on the basis of mid-term and final examinations and/or projects, class participation, and attendance. A paper in Spanish is required in many CIEE courses. Numerical grades are given based on a 10-point scale and converted to the U.S. grading scale.

Session I
COMM 3004 SCMJ/HISP 3001 SCMJ: Digital and Visual Culture in Contemporary Spain
This course introduces students to the active and multidisciplinary scene of digital production in Spain and Europe, with an emphasis on the work of individuals and collectives who address mass media issues from a social and cultural critical perspective. The course connects students with a fairly young, and very intellectually active segment of the host society by visiting organizations and production centers, and by participating in events organized around the city. Special emphasis is placed on the notion of shared cultural action and shared creativity through new media.
Session II
COMM 3006 SCMJ/SPAN 3003 SCMJ: Spanish Skills in Context: Podcast Reporting
This hands-on course combines a revision of advanced Spanish language skills with the production of an audio podcast featuring interviews, broadcasting of events, docudramas, news, and debates. Students develop written exercises intended for the ear and not for the eye therefore emphasizing the expressiveness of sound atmospheres and the imaginary provided by music to support their texts. They discover and share contents in Spanish about their experiences in the host society as they expand their linguistic, cultural, and social competencies while at the same time experimenting with locution, recording, and editing techniques.
