  • 6/12/2011 Update on Student-Led Strikes in Chile

CIEE has been informed of student-led strikes at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV) and the Universidad de Chile in Santiago which have resulted in the suspension of many classes at both universities. In Valparaiso, courses managed by the PUCV Office of International Programs are operating normally, and access to Office of International Programs and classrooms have not been affected. At both institutions, staff are working diligently to minimize the impact of strikes and course cancellations on the academic progress of international students. CIEE staff at both universities are working in concert with staff and professors to allow students to continue their studies through alternate study plans and assignments, off-campus class meetings, and course tutors as needed.

Due to the student-led nature of the strikes, CIEE cannot predict how long the situation will last. However, efforts are being made to restore normalcy as soon as possible. Students have been instructed to contact instructors regarding alternative study plans, and at both schools, professors have been asked to be responsive to the special needs of international students. All CIEE students have been instructed to avoid protests or other strike-related activities and events.

Should the strikes continue beyond this week, CIEE will continue to work with local professors and university administrations on alternative arrangements for students. CIEE and its host institutions in Chile are committed to ensuring that students are able to complete their courses and earn academic credit for their program as scheduled. CIEE is in contact with the home school advisors of all CIEE students to keep them informed of the situation. Any additional information on the situation will be posted here as it becomes available.

  • 5/2/2011 Worldwide Travel Alert

The U.S. Department of State alerts U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad to the enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan. Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations.

  • 4/28/2011 Update on CIEE Students in Morocco

Today, April 28th, an explosion in Marrakesh, Morocco at a popular café killed at least 14 people and injured 20, including several foreigners.  All of the CIEE Rabat students and staff are safe in Rabat.  CIEE has been in contact with the CIEE Rabat Resident Director and the CIEE regional security consultant today.  While this appears to have been an isolated incident, CIEE students have been told to keep a low profile and avoid local restaurants, cafes, and stores that are frequented by tourists and expatriates.  CIEE will continue to monitor the situation, but we do not anticipate that it will be necessary to make any changes to the scheduled program activities.

  • 4/15/2011 JAPAN: Travel Warning Downgraded to a Travel Alert: The Department of State has lifted Voluntary Authorized Departure, allowing dependents of the U.S. government employees to return to Japan.

The assessment of technical and subject matter experts across United States Government agencies is that while the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant remains serious and dynamic, the health and safety risks to areas beyond the 50 mile evacuation zone, and particularly to Tokyo, Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture), Yokohama (Kanagawa Prefecture) nearby U.S. military facilities and the prefectures of Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Gunma, Iwate, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizuoka, Tochigi, and Yamanashi, and those portions of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures which are outside a 50 mile radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are low and do not pose significant risks to U.S. citizens.

  • 3/11/2011 Update: CIEE Tokyo -- Impact of Earthquake

Japan has recently been impacted by the largest earthquake in the last 100+ years.

Although all academic year CIEE students are currently on break from their academic program at Sophia University, CIEE staff have confirmed the safety and whereabouts of our students either in Japan or travelling outside of Japan. Due to the late-spring start of our spring semester, those students have yet to arrive on-site to begin their program. Please be aware that cell phone communications in Japan have been impacted by the earthquake so students should be contacted via email, Facebook, or SKYPE.

We are continuing to follow the ramifications of the earthquake in northern Japan and will send additional updates as deemed necessary.

  • 3/11/2011 Latin America Tsunami Warning as a Result of Japan Earthquake

CIEE program staff has been in contact with students in Chile and Peru to alert them of a tsunami warning and to emphasize the safety precautions below. The tsunami is a result of a 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Friday, and the warning extends to coastal regions in South and Central America. Some of the tsunami safety precautions that we have given to students, both at orientation and again today, include:

       - Stay away from beaches
       - Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
       - Do not go sightseeing
       - Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
       - Follow instructions of your local civil defense authorities
       - Get in contact with your parents to assure them that you are okay

The tsunami warning applies to the following CIEE program locations:

       - Chile: Valparaíso only-Expected to hit at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, local time
       - Lima, Peru-Expected to hit at 7:30 p.m. FRIDAY, local time

The west coast of Mexico and coastal areas of Costa Rica and Nicaragua are also under a tsunami warning. However, our program locations of Managua (Nicaragua), Monteverde (Costa Rica), and Guanajuato (Mexico) are all inland locations and hence not affected.

  • 2/22/2011 Update on Events in Jordan, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates

CIEE is in regular contact with our resident staff in Jordan, Morocco, and the UAE and we are receiving regular updates from the regional security consultant who provides support for our programs in the northern Africa and the Middle East region. While there have been organized protests in Jordan and Morocco over the past few days, the situation in both countries remains relatively stable and peaceful. There haven't been any problems or protests in the UAE. As of today, all three of these CIEE Study Centers are operating on a normal schedule, and all of the students are doing fine.

Please find below additional information about these locations:

    JORDAN:
Protests in Amman have been occurring on a regular basis for the past few weeks. Most of the organized demonstrations and sit-ins this week focused on continuing concerns about the economy and perceived lack of support from the government. These protests have generally been non-violent and announced in advance. CIEE staff have been able to alert students to upcoming public protests and keep them away from these gatherings. Although the government has granted many concessions, additional protests and sit-ins are likely to occur in the coming days. Programs at the CIEE Study Center in Amman are operating on a normal schedule, and all of the students are doing fine. They are being reminded to avoid any public demonstrations, remain vigilant about personal safety, and adhere carefully to CIEE safety and security protocols.

    MOROCCO:
There were peaceful demonstrations in Rabat on February 20. Additional demonstrations occurred in other Moroccan cities, and there were a few violent incidents in Tangiers, Marrakesh, Al-Hoceima, and Fez. In contrast to the situation in other parts of the region, however, these events were covered fully by Moroccan media and appear to have been the work of opportunistic looters rather than the result of political violence. Human rights organizations, political parties, and NGOs have all released statements condemning the violence and stating that what happened had nothing to do with politics or any social claims. The Language and Culture program at the CIEE Study Center in Rabat is operating on a normal schedule, and all of the students are safe. They have been reminded to avoid all public demonstrations and remain vigilant about their personal safety and security.

    UAE:
The situation in the UAE has remained completely calm, and there haven't been any reports of protests or problems. The public remains supportive of the country's leadership, and the Business, Engineering, Arts and Sciences program at the CIEE Study Center in Sharjah is operating on its normal schedule.

We will continue to work closely with our resident staff in these locations and our regional security consultant to monitor these situations and provide updates here as appropriate. Again, while there have been protests in Jordan and Morocco, our programs are operating normally, and our students are doing well and have been encouraged to communicate directly with their parents during this challenging time in the region.
