GAIN: Global Access Initiative Grant

CIEE created the Global Access Initiative (GAIN) to help students overcome the major barriers to studying abroad, namely costs and curriculum requirements. GAIN aids in the diversification of study abroad by providing overseas opportunities for students who are economically challenged.

Each year, CIEE provides $1 million to expand access for students to full-year, semester, and summer study abroad programs.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

Be a CIEE Study Center applicant

  • Demonstrating financial need and/or otherwise defining barriers to overcome in order to be able to study abroad

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The following are required in addition to the general online application:

A PERSONAL ESSAY THAT ANSWERS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

  1. What barriers (academic, social, or personal) have you, or will you need to, overcome to be able to study abroad?
  2. As a person who will have overcome obstacles in pursuit of an international experience, how do you plan to encourage other students with similar challenges to studying abroad?

RETURN REQUIREMENT

Upon returning from abroad, all CIEE scholarship or grant recipients must submit a creative report. Report requirements can be viewed under the Return Requirements section listed under General CIEE Scholarship Information.

AWARDS

Awards are distributed in the form of an airline ticket up to $1500. In the event the airline ticket is less than $1500 the balance will be awarded directly to the student and mailed to the student’s permanent address approximately four weeks prior to departure date.
