Student Stories

I didn’t know what to expect coming into my fall semester in Shanghai. The thought of leaving the comforts and familiarity of my life in California for a place where everything would essentially be foreign was both exciting and overwhelming. I can now say, however, that my year in China will forever change my life.

From the beginning, I tried to make the most out of my time in Shanghai. When I wasn’t in class, I was hanging out with Chinese students on campus, exploring the city with my CIEE classmates, or chatting with the food vendors by the back gate of our school. Every day brought itself a new adventure. Whether I was ordering food in Chinese for the first time or testing out different bargaining techniques, never before had I encountered so many new situations in my life. With each passing day, my thirst to learn more about the language, culture, and essentially every aspect of the country grew increasingly stronger. Between making friends with locals and traveling around to different cities, I always found opportunities to apply and further investigate what I had learned in class.

At the same time, I did not embark on my journey alone. Throughout my stay in Shanghai, CIEE served as my support system. Classes provided structured learning, while excursions and extracurricular activities supplemented classroom education. CIEE classmates became the type of lifelong friends who I quickly learned to depend upon during my adventures and to relate with about our shared experience as foreign students in China. CIEE teachers and staff served as experienced guides equipped with all the resources and advice necessary to make the most out of our study abroad experiences. Along with my newly made CIEE and Chinese friends, they became my family away from home.

Housing & Meals

This program fosters a Chinese language-only environment. In order to support students to maximize Chinese language proficiency gains, all participants on this program live with Chinese host families. Chinese host families are located within five to 15 minutes from campus by walking or public transportation. Students have their own room in the host family apartment and share the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Students are invited to most family meals, but should budget for their own lunches, some weekend meals, and all meals during group field trips and individual travel. Chinese family members speak Chinese only.

Housing between fall and spring semesters is included in the academic year fee. Academic year participants may be required to live in a dormitory on campus between semesters.

Internet

Host family homes have wireless or cable Internet access. A limited number of computers are available for use at no charge in the CIEE Student Library or at nearby Internet cafés for a low hourly fee. The CIEE Study Center has wireless access and students are encouraged to bring wireless-enabled laptops.

Updates from Abroad

Are you curious about how students spend their time abroad at a CIEE Study Center? There are so many exciting activities that we thought study abroad advisors - and you - would love to learn about, that we asked our Resident Directors to describe CIEE orientation, field trips, courses, and more. The information they send back is the best way to learn about on-site activities first-hand.

Orientation

Online Pre-Departure and On-Site Orientations
Students begin their study abroad experience in Shanghai before leaving home—by participating in a CIEE Online Pre-Departure Orientation. Meeting with students online, the Center Director and other Resident Staff share information about the program and site, highlighting issues that alumni have said are important and giving students time to ask questions before leaving home. The online orientation allows students to connect with others in the group, reflect on what they want to get out of the program, and learn what others in the group would like to accomplish.

A mandatory weeklong orientation session, conducted in Shanghai at the beginning of the program, introduces students to the country, culture, and academic program, as well as provides necessary logistical information about adapting to life in Shanghai. Students also take their language placement exams at this time to determine their appropriate Chinese language level. Required and optional workshops and local excursions are led by CIEE Staff. Students also meet individually with the Center Director and Chinese Language Director as appropriate to finalize course registration and preview assigned materials for their required courses. Ongoing support is provided on an individual and group basis throughout the program, including required monthly program meetings.
