New 2010 CIEE Summer Program
CIEE Study Center at the University of Cape Town, South Africa South African Studies
Students enrolled in the Summer South African Studies program spend five weeks learning firsthand about the political, economic, cultural, and environmental transformations impacting South Africa today. Students volunteer at local NGOs, schools, and other organizations. They also participate in a week-long homestay and further their understanding of issues facing South Africa (and Africa in general) through classroom learning and cultural excursions.
Seminar on Living and Learning Abroad
To help bridge the gap between raw experience and active learning, CIEE is now offering a unique Seminar on Living and Learning Abroad for students in 16 programs around the globe. This interactive course provides an ongoing intercultural orientation through theory, activities, discussion, and analytic reflection and writing.
Topics include: values and culture; educational culture, stereotypes and generalizations; intercultural communication; global and self-awareness; empathy; perspective-shifting; and articulating newfound knowledge and skills upon returning home. Discussions center on students’ experiences in engaging with local people. Written assignments offer opportunities to apply the concepts they have learned, and to analyze their own interactions in the host culture.
