CIEE Responds to the Crisis in Haiti
CIEE has made a donation to the Emergency Relief Fund of Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) on behalf of CIEE employees worldwide. According to the MSF website, donations to this fund will ensure that their medical team in Haiti, currently more than 700 staff, can respond to the immediate and severe medical needs of the Haitian people.
Although CIEE does not currently run programs in Haiti, we do have Study Centers in the Dominican Republic, in both Santiago and Santo Domingo. Resident staff and students have been directly involved with collecting drinking water, milk, canned foods, medicine, and blood. In addition, students are working with the local branch of the Red Cross during their free time.
To learn more about the experience firsthand, read CIEE Santiago Liberal Arts student Sara Richart’s article she submitted to Indiana University’s student newspaper.
Enrollment Updates
CIEE Study Center at the University of Jordan—Admissions Update
Beginning with applications for the fall 2010 semester, CIEE will return to a rolling admissions process for the Amman Language and Culture program. CIEE has increased its capacity in Amman and can now accommodate a larger number of qualified students. CIEE will continue to screen all applicants carefully so as to ensure the highest overall quality of the student group. Students must still meet the 3.0 GPA requirement and other general CIEE application criteria, and should focus their personal statements on the CIEE Amman Language and Culture program and their goals for study abroad in Jordan. In the event CIEE is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants, we will notify advisors when the program is approaching capacity and create a waitlist if necessary.
CIEE Application Deadline Reminder
Applications are currently under review for the summer 2010 and fall 2010 semesters. Admission to CIEE programs is done on a rolling basis with the exception of our Central European Studies program in Prague, Czech Republic and the Arts and Sciences program in Dakar, Senegal. Students are encouraged to submit applications in advance of the application deadline for these programs.
The application deadline for most summer 2010 and fall 2010 programs is April 1. Please note the following programs have earlier application deadlines:
Summer
- March 1South Africa
- March 15China, Ghana, Japan, and Russia
Fall
- March 15Czech Republic, England, Japan, Jordan, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand
Passport
All students must have a valid passport to participate on a CIEE program. Passports should be valid for at least six months past the program’s end date. Students without a valid passport (or one that expires less than six months after the program end date) should apply without delay for a new passport. We suggest that students expedite their passport application in order to receive their new passports in plenty of time to complete any necessary visa applications or pre-departure procedures required by the host country.
Spring 2011 Application Review
Students planning ahead for a spring 2011 semester abroad with CIEE should be aware that review of applications for admission to a spring 2011 program will begin on July 15, 2010.
Summer Program Highlight: Accelerated Chinese Language
CIEE Study Center at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China
The summer Accelerated Chinese Language program will accelerate the language ability of intermediate- and advanced-level Chinese language students, allowing them to complete a second or third year of Chinese in one summer. These goals are achieved through intensive, daily Chinese language coursework and other curricular activities. Students will also apply these language skills in everyday situations in Shanghai and while traveling around China.
