CIEE Academic Consortium Board (ACB) Monitoring

CIEE is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of international education professionals involved with program development, on-going program evaluation, and Academic Consortium outreach.

ACB members are currently monitoring each of the semester CIEE Study Center programs. This involves reading each program’s Annual Study Center Review, analyzing a staff generated critical components assessment, and individual student evaluations. ACB members then produce a “state of the program” report which typically results in on-going conversations with relevant CIEE staff. Finally, ACB members meet with staff in person at their fall meeting in order to discuss specific issues and/or regional trends that surfaced during the monitoring process. The ACB Executive Committee uses the results of monitoring to set the schedule for upcoming on-site evaluations. Academic Consortium members are notified each November when the semester monitoring process is complete.

CIEE Scholarships
CIEE has a number of scholarships and grants available to extend the study abroad experience to those students in need of financial assistance.

U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Project Abroad Scholarship for Programs in China
Do you have students interested in studying in Asia? This CIEE scholarship program was created with funding from the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad to provide scholarship funding to qualified CIEE program participants that intend to continue advanced studies in the Chinese language and pursue a career in academia or public affairs following their semester or year with CIEE in China or Taiwan. Participants of advanced language programs offered by the CIEE Study Centers at Peking University (Beijing), East China Normal University (Shanghai), Nanjing University [Nanjing], and National Chengchi University (Taipei) are encouraged to apply for these awards.

Resident Director Blogs
A new feature on the CIEE website is Resident Director blogs. There is no better way to learn about a program than to get an insider’s perspective.

Between Tradition and Modernity
Dr. Bradley Rink, Resident Director at the CIEE Study Center in Stellenbosch, South Africa
Life in South Africa is never dull. One of the most interesting aspects for me is the interface (sometimes the clash) of tradition and modernity within the many cultural expressions of South Africanness. These interactions play themselves out in many ways on the South African landscape: investment bankers in luxury German sedans sharing the road with scrap dealers on cart horses; informal trading markets sprouting up in the path of multi-national shopping complexes; and sangomas (traditional healers) serving alongside western-trained medical doctors. Revolution and Neoliberalism in Nicaragua
Dr. Hector Cruz-Feliciano, Resident Director at the CIEE Study Center in Managua, Nicaragua
The idea of the required core course, Revolution and Neoliberal Reform in Nicaragua, is that the students learn and have fun at the same time, discussing, visiting places, watching videos, and alternating with anecdotal readings that are both entertaining and insightful. In the last few classes we have read and discussed the revolutionary memoirs of two of the best known Nicaraguan writers: Sergio Ramirez and Ernesto Cardenal. CIEE Study Center in Sydney, Australia—Program Update
CIEE will cease operating its CIEE Study Center in Sydney, Australia at the end of 2009.

This decision in no way reflects on our host partners, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University or on the very capable work the Resident Director, Naomi Kleinman. This decision was made purely on the basis of insufficient student enrollments.

Students interested studying in Australia may continue to do so at two other CIEE Study Centers based at the University of Wollongong and Murdoch University, which continue to provide strong academic programs with excellent mentoring, intercultural learning, unique activities, and general support from CIEE staff.
