We realize you may have visited these cities before, but on a site visit you’ll acquire a better understanding of the culture in which the programs operate.

CIEE Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee
The deadline for proposing a session for the CIEE Annual Conference in Nashville is February 1. This year’s theme, Setting the Stage: Managing Growth in Study Abroad, will discuss the management techniques that are absolutely critical to the effectiveness of carefully-designed programs, while enrollments continue to grow. The conference will address such issues as the impact of students on a host community, training for professionals in the field, and pre- and post-departure orientation for students.

Beijing, China – Chinese Language and Ethnic Studies at Central University of Nationalities

Eligibility Update
The eligibility requirement has changed from 0-2 to 0-4 semesters of Chinese to accommodate those with a higher level of Chinese.

New Language Course
CHIN 2003 CCUN
Chinese Language—Intermediate
This course is designed for students with an intermediate level of Chinese, typically, those with three or four semesters of college-level Chinese. The equivalent of this course is “Intermediate Chinese II” in a U.S. curriculum. This course continues to develop the four skills of aurally understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese. Students are required to comprehend and produce paragraph-level Chinese with high accuracy and fluency.

Staff Update
Dr. Dan Smyer Yu, Resident Director, has recently published a number of articles. “Genuine Charisma and Its Transmissibility: The Inner Landscape of Tulkus in Contemporary Tibetan Buddhist Revival in Kham and Golok.” is an ethnographic account of contemporary Tibetan Buddhist revival in eastern Tibet, published in The Tibet Journal, Vol. XXXI, No.4, Winter 2006, pp.57-78. “Living Buddhas, Netizens, and the Price of Religious Freedom” was published in Privatizing China: Socialism from Afar by Cornell University Press. Dr. Smyer Yu’s chapter examines the popular imagination of Tibetan Buddhist spirituality through cyberspace among Chinese Buddhists in the midst of China’s privatization process. "Emotions under Local Nationalism: The Primordial Turn of Tibetan Intellectuals in China," was published in The Pacific Rim Report, Vol.42, June 2006 by The University of San Francisco. This article is a study of emerging ethnic nationalism among Tibetan intellectuals in contemporary China.

Beijing, China – Summer Program
Due to the highly anticipated Beijing summer Olympic Games, there will be an enrollment limit of 70 students on the CIEE Beijing summer 2008 program. Interested students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure participation on the program. The tentative dates for summer 2008 are June 2 - July 27. Official dates will be posted to the CIEE website in mid-February.

Shanghai, China
At the 2007 ACTFL conference in San Antonio, TX, the work of Jianling Liao, Language Director at the CIEE Study Center in Shanghai, was presented in the session, Building Higher Level Chinese Language Skills. Her research investigates the impacts of interactive discussions on individual-based Chinese L2 writing. The two forms of interactive discussions explored are synchronous computer-mediated communication (S-CMC) and face-to-face oral discussion.

Dublin, Ireland
Brian Doherty is the new Resident Coordinator at the CIEE Study Center in Dublin. Brian has been living and working in Dublin for the last 2 years and has experience in the study abroad field. Originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Brian holds degrees in Germanic studies and Trombone Performance from Indiana University, Bloomington. Brian credits his ancestry for his interest in all things Irish, and enjoys soaking in all of the culture that Dublin has to offer.

Hyderabad, India
CIEE staff in Portland and the Study Center in Hyderabad helped to organize a 3-day meeting for resident directors, appointed U.S. faculty directors, language instructors, and support staff to share information, discuss best practices, and establish communication and collaboration networks to strengthen and improve U.S. academic program management in India. The meeting took place December 9-12 in New Delhi, India.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Juan Mallea, Student Coordinator at the CIEE Study Center in Buenos Aires, was recently selected to be an International Fellow at the Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio. The Kettering Foundation is a non-profit organization that conducts research on education, international affairs, and democracy. Prior to being selected as an International Fellow, Juan participated in two workshops on Deliberative Democracy and will now join other international fellows for a six-month residency program focusing on International Civil Society to further study the role of a deliberative public in the political work of their home communities. The knowledge that Juan gains will be very useful to the CIEE Study Center in Buenos Aires due to his integral involvement in the teaching and management of the CIEE course entitled, "Seminar on Community Service and Volunteerism".
