A Research Agenda for Study Abroad
A summary of the roundtable discussions held at the CIEE Annual Conference in Miami related to a research agenda for study abroad. We’ve combined the ideas with our own thinking and have outlined a research agenda.
What's It All About?
Our sixth essay points out that study abroad is all too often not meeting its potential for preparing students for life after graduation. It argues that for programs to meet this goal, they need to meet several minimum conditions.
Numbers
In study abroad these days, there is a good deal of discussion about the numbers. Are we too focused on the numbers? Are there too many numbers?
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Our eighth essay discusses the importance of an independent evaluation process. By setting goals, the terms of evaluation, and inputs, the evaluation process can be effective in recognizing strengths and weaknesses of any program.
Down with America: Anti-Americanism in Study Abroad
This essay addresses the diminished popularity of the U.S. abroad. However, rather than be disturbed, we see this time as a huge opportunity to reaffirm the value of study abroad for American college students through pedagogical, simple exercises.
Beware the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
This essay discusses commercialization in study abroad and consequently the over-population of American students in certain locations, resulting in the purposes of study abroad – cultural integration, language acquisitions, and personal exploration – difficult to achieve.

A Good Time
Our fourteenth essay discusses the current economic and social environments, how they are affecting study, and our thoughts on continuing growth in study abroad.
Quality Management and Study Abroad
This essay discusses how quality management is a key activity in the ongoing growth and development of study abroad, and will prompt those in the field to think about their own efforts and help them further develop their own evaluation processes.
A Rose by Any Other Name
Our sixteenth essay addresses community engagement, internships, and service-learning. There has been a push to provide these experiential opportunities on study abroad programs; however, there is a big difference in purpose, time, and engagement between the three, and often they are represented as similar experiences. Taking the time to evaluate these opportunities will benefit all involved, and will make the field experience an important contributor to learning in study abroad.
Where to From Here?
The seventeenth essay in the Our View Series discusses the attempts to present a framework for thinking ahead regarding study abroad programming during the next few years.
A Personal Perspective
The eighteenth essay in the Our View Series is "A Personal Perspective" wherein Stevan Trooboff shares his thoughts on retirement, CIEE moving forward, and Study Abroad in general.
