CIEE Study Centers

CIEE Announces Two New Study Centers: Gaborone, Botswana and Lisbon, Portugal

The CIEE Study Center at the University of Botswana offers students from a wide range of academic disciplines the opportunity to live and study in Botswana, learning firsthand about the country and its people, while pursuing an intensive curriculum in classes with local students. Students enroll in a Setswana language course, the CIEE Language and Culture Practicum, and four university courses, one of which must focus on Botswana or Southern Africa. Many of the University of Botswana courses also include outside research and community-based projects. For complete information on this new semester and academic year program beginning in fall 2007, please click here.

The CIEE Study Center at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, designed for students with beginning to advanced level Portuguese language skills, allows students to develop competency in Portuguese language through a semester-long language course; to enhance their understanding of contemporary Portuguese society and culture through the CIEE core curriculum; and, where language skills permit; to meet a wide variety of academic interests through direct matriculation at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The CIEE Study Center in Lisbon will open in the fall of 2007; please click here for complete information.

Resident Staff
Please join us in welcoming the following new CIEE Resident Staff.

Hyderabad, India
Dr. Vasudeva Rao, new Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Hyderabad, received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi in 1998. Following the completion of his doctoral program, Dr. Rao participated in several large-scale projects in the areas of capacity building and program evaluation in the NGO sector in India. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Rao worked as a Program Analyst for a UNDP project focused on child labor and education. His work allowed him to meet hundreds of different people from diverse areas of India which provided him with vast perspective on Indian society and subcultures within it. Recently, he has worked as an adjunct faculty at the Indian Institute of Planning and Management teaching an Organizational Behavior course to graduate students and founded the “Resource Center for Dynamic Living” which aims to combine traditional Indian philosophy (meditation, yoga, music) with modern day methods for self-empowerment and improvement.

Dr. Rao is excited to begin his work with the program having studied and lived abroad himself during his formative years as a teenager in the United States.

Lima, Peru
Dr. Melvin Ledgard, Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Lima, completed his undergraduate studies in linguistics and literature at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru (PUCP). Dr. Ledgard then earned a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from the University of Texas in Austin in 1995. He is very familiar with the U.S. university academic system through his experience teaching undergraduates for 9 ½ years in the U.S. at UT-Austin and Pace University in New York City. In addition, he has taught literature at the Ricardo Palma Private University in Lima from 1985-1989 and since 1999 has been teaching literature and film at PUCP.

Marion Tizón, Resident Coordinator of the CIEE Study Center in Lima, earned her BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Swarthmore College in 2004 during which she spent one year as an exchange student at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru. After graduating, she worked in the CIEE Portland office as the Enrollment Officer for experiential programs: Teach in Asia, International Volunteer Programs, Work Abroad, and International Faculty Development Seminars.

Please click here to read the full conference evaluation.

Propose a Session for Toronto, Canada, November 2007
Consider proposing a session for next year’s CIEE conference: Challenging Assumptions: Evaluating Study Abroad’s Past, Fashioning its Future. As we celebrate our 60th year, we think this is a good opportunity to reflect on where international education has been, where it is now, and where it’s going.

The conference will address such issues as globalization, diversity, and student learning. We’ll discuss the impact of study abroad on both students and host communities, and discuss issues such as pandemics and terrorism. Click here for more information and download the full Call for Proposals. The deadline for session proposals is February 1, 2007.

CIEE Study Center in the News: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
On Tuesday November 21st the CIEE Study Center in Amsterdam held its first annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Buurtboerderij, a former squatter’s farm that is now functioning as a community center. The Buurtboerderij provides 3-course meals for 6 Euros to anybody needing one, and organizes a range of activities for the neighborhood such as concerts, performances, and clothes-making workshops. It is a place where people can go if they need a place to stay, a warm meal, or simply a friendly face.

CIEE students and staff were divided up into groups of four and asked to prepare an appetizer, a salad, a dessert, or a casserole. The turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pies were prepared by Alexi Perrin, a local cook, aided by CIEE students.

Locals were invited to the CIEE Thanksgiving dinner and all of the proceeds were donated to the Buurtboerderij. The dinner reached the ears of two journalists working for the local Dutch newspaper, Het Parool and they interviewed the students and wrote a small article about the event.
