CIEE Annual Conference
Pre-registration for the CIEE conference is available until this Friday, October 28th. Register online at www.ciee.org/conference or call 1.800.40.STUDY. After October 28th, registration will be available on-site in Miami.
We have been in touch with our contacts at the Radisson Miami Hotel, who have reported that the hotel did not sustain any serious damage from Hurricane Wilma. Although the hotel did lose power and phone service, phones have been restored and they expect full power to be restored in the coming days.
If you’re interested in learning more about Miami while you’re there, consider a CIEE Optional Tour on Saturday, November 19. Choose from the Little Havana Tour, the South Beach Art Deco Tour, or the Miami Riverfront Walk. Attendees will meet in the Radisson Lobby at 4:30pm for a 4:45pm departure. Suzanne Crowder Han
Suzanne Crowder Han will begin begun her new role as the Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea this December. A longtime resident of Korea and fluent in Korean, Ms. Han came to Korea in 1977 as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer. She completed her two-year term of service in a rural health center in Chungju and later became an in-country Peace Corps staff, training volunteers. She has taught at several Korean universities, including Yonsei University, Chung-ang University, and Hankook University of Foreign Studies and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina.
An accomplished author, Ms. Han has written several books and articles on Korean customs and traditions. Her stories based on Korean folk-tales are included in a number of anthologies and children’s reading textbooks in North America.
Ms. Han is currently Vice President of the International Dragon Circle, a cross-cultural women’s group dedicated to the study and appreciation of Korean culture. In addition, she is the Chairperson of the Seoul Foreign School Council and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Women’s Club of Korea and Editor of its acclaimed journal, Arirang.
Dr. Lynne Guitar
Dr. Lynne Guitar, the Resident Director of the CIEE Study Center in Santiago, Dominican Republic, was contacted in 2004 by the History Channel to collaborate in the scripting and filming of a program for their series, Deep Sea Detectives. The program, Caribbean Island, was filmed in December of 2004 and released in July, and has been shown periodically since. The show features interviews with Lynne, an anthropologist and historian, as well as other local specialists, underwater cave explorations, visits to museums, and the national archives in the Dominican Republic. Caribbean Island discusses what happened to the Tainos, the indigenous people of the Greater Antilles.
