Admissions Update: CIEE Study Center in Monteverde, Costa Rica
We have received a great number of early applications for the CIEE Study Center in Monteverde, Costa Rica. If you are in the process of reviewing applications for the spring 2008 program, we ask that you forward these to CIEE as soon as possible for consideration as the program is filling rapidly and there are a limited number of spaces available.
CIEE offers many other programs in Latin America, and we strongly recommend that students indicate a second choice option on their application in the event they are placed on a waiting list. Please have your students consider the CIEE Study Center in Bonaire.
If you have any questions, please contact Libby Lauze, Manager, Enrollment, at 1.800.40.STUDY ext. 4141 or via e-mail at elauze@ciee.org.
PIER Advisor: The New and Improved Advisor Extranet!
We have launched new tools, a new look, and a new name for what was formerly the CIEE Advisor Extranet. Now called PIER Advisor, it is still accessible from your My CIEE account and still contains important enrollment information on your students studying abroad with CIEE. In addition, we have added new sections where you are able to view your students’ online application data, review their checklists to see what materials they are missing, and view their emergency contact information. New and improved help files are also available.
If you had never used the CIEE Advisor Extranet, please get in touch with your Manager, Institutional Relationships to request access to PIER Advisor. If there are additional staff in your office that should have access, please let them know that as well. If you have questions as you’re creating your account, please e-mail applications@ciee.org.
If you are attending the CIEE Annual Conference in Toronto, visit us at Meet CIEE: Coffee and Conversation on Thursday afternoon, November 15, 4:30-7:00pm. We will be at the Enrollment table, happy to answer any questions!
Curious as to why it’s named the PIER?
- The "pier" has a historical link to Portland's status as a maritime city
- The "pier" is traditionally a place where information and ideas are exchanged
- The "pier" is both a storehouse and a jumping-off point
- The "pier" was the place from which the original CIEE participants departed aboard Liberty ships in 1947

Spanish and Portuguese Options for Your Students
Do you have students interested in improving their Spanish in Spain, but perhaps not in one of the more traditional cities for study abroad? Is one of your students looking to learn Portuguese in Portugal, not Brazil? Please have them consider the CIEE Study Centers in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal.
At the CIEE Study Center in Palma, students can study economics, business, philology, humanities, social sciences, or hotel management—and do a for-credit internship in addition to taking a CIEE Spanish language course and core course. They’ll need 5 semesters of Spanish and a 2.75 GPA to be eligible.
At the CIEE Study Center in Lisbon, students enroll in a semester-long Portuguese language course and four additional courses from a CIEE core curriculum taught in English and shared with other international and Portuguese students.
Visit a CIEE Study Center
A number of CIEE site visits are scheduled for spring 2008. Consider visiting one of our Study Centers to learn about the academic program, cultural activities and excursions, and meet with Resident Staff and current students.

Passport Update
According to the U.S. State Department, routine processing for passports may take as long as six to eight weeks. This is due to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a law requiring airline passengers entering the U.S. from within the Western Hemisphere to possess a valid passport.
It has taken many of our students twelve weeks or more to get a new passport. Spring 2008 students need to have their passports by early November in order to apply for a visa. CIEE strongly recommends that they expedite their passport applications. Please remember that passports must be valid for at least six months after the end date of their program.
