CIEE Study Centers
Sevilla, Spain – mas+menos magazine now online
Mas+menos, a magazine produced by students on the Liberal Arts program at the CIEE Study Center in Sevilla, Spain, began in 2003 to encourage American and Spanish students to work together on the creation of articles, personal stories, interviews, and reports around a given topic, with guidance from professional journalists and CIEE resident staff. Mas+menos is now available online, where you can read the articles and also download a pdf of the magazine.

Issues 7 and 8 of the magazine explore the experience of living with disabilities. Students and interviewees discuss family, adjusting to a disability, careers, and the changing societal attitudes towards people with disabilities. This opportunity to interact with Spaniards with disabilities provided the students with new insights into the whole spectrum of Spanish society, expanding their intercultural awareness.

If you’re looking for resources for your students to talk to about studying abroad with a disability, consider local NGOs led by people with disabilities. These organizations, or Disability Studies faculty on campuses, may be able to suggest articles. For other suggestions or further information, contact Michele Scheib at Mobility International USA, mscheib@miusa.org. Or if you are attending the CIEE Conference in Toronto in November, consider attending the session Navigating the Unknown with Students with Disabilities: What is Reasonable or Appropriate Overseas?

Southern Africa
Are your students looking for Southern Africa options, but not necessarily Cape Town? Newer CIEE Study Center programs in Southern Africa include Stellenbosch, South Africa and Gaborone, Botswana.

In Stellenbosch, students study the nation’s transformation alongside local students in a picturesque college town, engaging the community through personalized volunteer opportunities and studying a wide variety of subjects from history to information science to psychology.

In Gaborone, students learn how Botswana is evolving to balance tradition and modernity, economic growth and preservation of natural resources, through experiential learning and direct matriculation in a variety of subjects. They’ll integrate into Botswanan life with community engagement, field research, day-to-day interaction at their university residence hall, and studying Setswana.

Course Highlight: CIEE Study Center in Madrid, Spain
If you have students interested in teaching English as a foreign language, have them consider the CIEE Study Center in Madrid. In the Professional Teaching Development course, CIEE students teach English to Spanish university students in a classroom setting, and receive guidance and instruction from language teaching experts at the university. They’ll trace the historical development of second language teaching methods and acquisition and evaluate new developments in the field which have led to interactive language teaching, learner-centered curricula, and a lexical approach. Through structured, experiential learning and practice, students have an opportunity to gain practical training and develop skills to become effective language instructors.

Passport Update
According to the U.S. State Department, routine processing for passports may take as long as six to eight weeks. This is due to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a law requiring airline passengers entering the U.S. from within the Western Hemisphere to possess a valid passport.

It has taken many of our students twelve weeks or more to get a new passport. Spring 2008 students need to have their passports by early November in order to apply for a visa. CIEE strongly recommends that they expedite their passport applications. Please remember that passports must be valid for at least six months after the end date of their program.
